YOUTH DETENTION CENTER IN THE U. S. • a secure residential facility for young people, often termed juvenile delinquents, awaiting court hearings and/or placement in long-term care facilities and programs • Juveniles go through a separate court system, the juvenile court, which sentences or commits juveniles to a certain program or facility.

MENTAL HEALTH • a surprisingly high population of juveniles who present serious mental health illness within juvenile facilities • different mental health programs are provided by facilities to help the youth rehabilitate • Mental health services: individual counseling, group counseling, crisis counseling, family intervention, medication management, and transition planning
EDUCATION • there does not exist a uniform standard for education in juvenile facilities • some schools within juvenile detention facilities are decentralized, some are centralized and run by school districts, and others are overseen by a State education agency
CONCERNS AND CRITICISM • overcrowding and ineffectiveness • is not prepared to handle the large number of residents • the facilities can become unstable and create instability in simple logistics • the decrease in availability to provide with promised programs and services • the adequacy of mental health programs
