Today’s Herson is like an autumn leaf: it’s now somewhere between the past and the future…
Do you know that Suvorov street which is now a center of Herson had lots of names before this one. First it was named Bogoroditska, then in 19 th century it got a name of Suvorov, at Soviet times its name was The street of May the 1 st, during the Nazi occupation - Adolf Hitlerstraße and only after the World War two the street got nowadays name again.
State garden is the oldest in the city. It was found in 18 th century. There is an oak tree in the park. This tree is supposed to be the same age as Herson. Some noblemen such as Suvorov, Potemkin and others used to have rest at the park.
One more old park of Herson is Lenin’s park. It had lots of names: Denis’ park, Olexandr’s park, Taras-Shevchenko’s park and at last Lenin’s park. The park vas founded by Potemkin in 1785. But it was destroyed several times. In 1869 it was rebuilt for the last time. The main landmark is a huge oak which was planted according to a legend by Olexandr the 2.

Huge banks and residences were located on the territory of “Greek suburb”. Rich citizens walked through big streets. The Soborna street, the street of Richelieu and the Nobel street are the historical center of the city.
