www. earthobservations. org Introduction: HONDURAS Forest Cover: 65, 982 Km 2 Territorial extension: 112, 492 km 2 (59% ) www. gfoi. org Population 2012: 8, 3 millones National Institute of Forest Conservation and Development, Protected Areas and Wildlife (ICF): Main function: ü Managing private and public forest resources sustainable management. to ensure rational and REDD + Technical Point of Honduras: ICF. Political Focal Point to the UNFCCC in Honduras: SERNA. Implementation of MRV: ICF through National Forest Monitoring Unit: is based on four pillars: (a) remote sensing, (b) Forest Inventory, (c) Development of allometric models and (d) Information systems and data reporting. www. earthobservations. org www. gfoi. org Status of National MRV Implementation • National Carbon Accounting Ambitions: Currently carbon accounting Honduras is done with a Tier 1, seeking to make reports at Tier 2. The main actions taken to achieve a Tier 2 report are: Ø Ø Ø Systematic database from local and regional inventories. Permanent Sampling Plots. Second national forest inventory (345 plots). Forest inventories in protected areas (214 plots). Allometric Relationships (3 species forest) SDCG-4, Caltech, CA, USA 4 th-6 th September 2013

www. earthobservations. org www. gfoi. org Institutional arrangements Relevant work with UN-REDD/FAO, World Bank. UN-REDD/FAO: • Currently with no activity UN-REDD/FAO framed in MRV. However, there are plans to Honduras from 2014 to integrate a national program. • Honduras currently has observer on the policy board of UN-REDD. • The delivery partner of Honduras to implement activities for REDD + (R-PP) is UNDP. World Bank: • The activities with the World Bank during 2012 and 2013 are focused on the preparation of the R-PP document, which was approved in the month of March 2013. www. earthobservations. org www. gfoi. org Current challenges & obstacles where GFOI assistance may be most valuable I. Define similar regional methodologies primarily on issues of carbon estimates, rate of deforestation, vegetation cover, among others. II. Promote the exchange of information, methodologies to national and regional level to avoid duplication of efforts and resources. III. Complexity: Monitoring requires multiple actors involved in the implementation of processes and reporting of results. INTERNATIONAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE. IV. Ensuring transparency and consistency in the reporting of results by objective consideration of the means and capacities. V. Consistency: Ensure in time Measurement, Verification and Country Report to compare their performance according to commitments. SDCG-4, Caltech, CA, USA 4 th-6 th September 2013
