Writing a Summary The Basics
Introduction • Reference to the author • Subject matter • Thesis statement e. g. The article “…” by … published in … of … deals with/considers/discusses (subject matter). The article/author argues/posits/ maintains that (thesis statement).
Body • Each paragraph starts with a topic sentence which expresses an idea supporting thesis statement. • A topic sentence is not to describe what the author writes about (The author analyses the economic situation in the country), but to state what the author’s opinion/position on the issue is.
Paragraph structure • A paragraph cannot consist of one sentence. The topic sentence should be developed, i. e. supported by examples, statistics, etc. e. g. The author points out that the economic situation is getting worse. One proof of this is …. Besides, …
Cohesion • Linking devices should reflect the author’s logic rather than just attempt to stick the paragraphs together. • The use of ‘moreover’, ‘besides’, ‘firstly’, ‘secondly’ should be justified. “Firstly’, ‘secondly’ can only be used to list things of the same order (causes, reasons, consequences).
Conclusion • A conclusion summarizing the summary is excessive and should be avoided. • Instead the summary should state the author’s final idea. e. g. The author concludes on an optimistic note, claiming that … In the final paragraph the author emphasizes that …
