What is a paragraph? A paragraph is a basic unit of organization in writing in which a group of related sentences develops one main idea.

A topic sentence - States the topic of the paragraph - Defines the controlling idea (=one or two specific areas the topic is limited to) e. g. Gold, a precious metal, is prized for two important characteristics. Topic: gold is a precious metal Controlling idea: two important characteristics of gold
Supporting sentences - Develop the topic sentence by giving examples, facts, quotations, reasons, statistics, etc. e. g. First of all, gold has a lustrous beauty that is resistant to corrosion. The most recent use of gold is in astronauts’ suits.
A concluding sentence - It signals the end of the paragraph and sums up the important points to remember. e. g. In conclusion, gold is treasured not only for its beauty, but also for its utility.
PARAGRAPH n It may stand by n It may be a itself. part of a longer piece of writing, such as a chapter of a book or an essay.
NUMBER OF SENTENCES The paragraph should be long enough to develop the main idea clearly.
