Worship in the Local Church Teaching… Studies In The Scriptures
Introduction Ø Our topic for study involves “church worship” Ø This will be a series devoted to what the Bible, specifically the New Testament, teaches about scriptural worship in the local church Ø Many “churches” today worship in various ways Ø To please God, we must have His approval/authority Ø Just because “we like it” or “can’t see anything wrong in it” doesn’t make it right with God Ø In fact, when man does his way, he is NOT doing God’s way (See Matthew 15: 7 -9)
The God-given distinction… Ø The NT is clear in the distinction between “individual action” and “church action” Ø I Tim. 5: 16; Mt. 18: 15 -18; I Cor. 11: 23 Ø When we look at the topic of “worship” in the NT, we can find instances of “church worship” and “individual worship” Ø BOTH are required by God and we must keep them separate and find Bible authority for everything the church does and everything the individual does and not confuse the two!
In spirit and in truth… Ø Jn 4: 24 Ø We can find that worship “in the church” includes: teaching the gospel/doctrine of Christ; partaking of the Lord’s Supper; prayer; giving as we have prospered; and singing scriptural spiritual songs. Ø In this lesson, we will look at “teaching” the gospel of Christ/doctrine of Christ/new testament.
Teaching… Ø First, we MUST understand that our “authority from God” for us today will come from the New Testament. Ø What was authorized under the Old Covenant, is not authorization from God for US today. Ø Gal. 5: 4; Acts 15 ex. Of attempt by some to bind circumcision of Old Law under New Law was incorrect Ø What does the NT authorize concerning teaching in the local church?
