WHO was established in April 7, 1948 Jawarharlal Neuru had given opinion to start WHO In 1980 the WHO declared that smallpox had been eradicated – the first disease in history to be eliminated by human effort
The WHOs constitution states that its objective “is the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health” The main tasks of WHO are: - to control outbreaks of infectious diseases; - to sponsor programs to prevent and treat diseases; - to conduct health research in communicable diseases, non-communicable conditions and injuries
Members of the WHO are 191 of the United Nations members Non-state territories of UN Member States may join as Associate Members (for example Puerto Rico)
The WHO Assembly generally meets in May each year The Assembly elects 34 members to the Executive Board. The main functions of the Board are to carry out the decisions and policies of the Assembly, to advise it
The WHO is financed by contributions from member states and from donors, among which there is pharmaceutical indastry
