Resume Tips What do you include on your resume? What are potential employers looking for?
Here’s the truth–it is rare to get hired by simply submitting a résumé –the purpose of the résumé is to help get you an interview. And at the interview, remember that 40 percent of a hiring decision is based on personality. You’ve got to get the interview and then convince the employer to hire you.
Use the best format for you! Chronological resumes list jobs in order, starting with the most recent job you held and working backwards. This format emphasizes work history and longevity. Functional resumes group accomplishments under specific areas of skills and abilities. Functional resumes focus on skills rather than lengths of employment. Career change positions and employment gaps do not stand out. Combination resumes are a hybrid of both the chronological and functional resumes. Combination resumes can feature your history as well as your skills.
Basic Do’s and Don’ts DO DON’T Keep it simple… no more Avoid a fancy-schmancy than two pages. Stick to traditional font of Times New Roman, 9 to 12 point size, and black type against a white paper. Use a reverse chronological order (from most recent to oldest). layout, with crazy boldface type, italics, and underlining. NEVER full justify. Don’t write “references available upon request”. Don’t use an unprofessional email address.
Be Clear and Concise Use bullet points. Points are skimmable. They are short. Readers can scan lists in seconds. Write short sentences. Keep the attention of hiring managers by writing simple, easy-to-follow sentences. Short and sweet lands the interview. Avoid repeating yourself. Tell the recruiter the important stuff once, at the beginning of your resume.

Responsible for Experienced Excellent written communication skills • Good: Wrote six user guides for 15, 000 users two weeks before deadline. • Bad: Experience programming in PHP. • Good: Programmed an online shopping cart for a Fortune 500 company in PHP. • Bad: I have excellent written communication skills. • Good: Wrote jargon-free online help documentation and reduced customer support calls by 50 percent.
Keywords to Avoid (continued) Team Player Detail oriented Successful • Bad: Team player working well in large and small groups. • Good: Worked with clients, software developers, technical writers, and designers to deliver financial reporting software three months before deadline. • Bad: Detail oriented public relations professional. • Good: Wrote custom press releases targeting 25 news agencies across Europe. • Bad: Successfully sold the product. • Good: Increased sales of organic chocolate by 32 percent.
Use Action Verbs and Active Voice Strong sentences are those in which a subject performs an action (active voice) as opposed to an action being performed on the subject (passive voice). For example, “I planned an event” creates a stronger impression than “An event was planned by me”. Incorrect Know how to use the Java programming language. Correct Programmed the online store in Java to support 1000 page views per second.
