Basic information History: New York City was founded by Dutch in 1624 and called New Amsterdam. Forty years later it was captured by the British and renamed New York. The skyscrapers of the business district are all in Manhatten. The first were built in 1903, 1913. Manhatten was built on a modern plan of streets and avenues. Most streets go from east to west and have numbers instead of names. Most avenues go from north to south. Brodway, the original Indian path, which is now a famous theater center.
