Who rules the country?
The US government is like a tree with a strong trunk and three branches. The trunk is the people. It holds up the tree: without the support of the people there can be no government.
There are three brunches: n Legislative [`led 3 islətiv] – законодательная власть n Executive [ig`zekjutiv] – исполнительная власть n Judicial [d 3 u: `di∫əl] – судебная власть
The US Government
1 st brunch – the Congress n The Congress makes the laws that everybody must obey. n The congress is divided into two parts, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Congress n The Constitution gives many powers to the Congress. n One important power of the Congress is the power to declare war.
The 2 nd brunch – The President n The President and his helpers carry out laws that the Congress makes. n The President signs bills and then they become law. n The US President is Commander in Chief of the country’s armed forces. n To become a president you must: 1. be born in the USA 2. be at least 35 years old 3. live in the USA for at least 14 years
The 3 rd brunch – the Supreme Court n It is made of nine judges – the most important judges in the land. n They have to make sure that the President and the Congress follow the Constitution. n They decide what the Constitution and the laws passed by the Congress mean when there is an argument about their meaning. n The judges work in the Supreme Court as long as they live.
