Water Under the Old Law • Played an important role in cleansing in the OT: – On the day of atonement • Priests required to wash with water before reentering the camp – Lev. 16: 24 -26 – We are not saved by water-alone! • Not saved by faith or grace alone! – Saved by God’s power! • How does God apply His power? • Where did God put the water? 2

God Put Water… • Between Noah and the evil world! – Saved from the flood by water • Hebrew 11: 7 – “By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet • seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith”. 1 Peter 3: 21 “-The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, ) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ”. Noah Obeyed God – “by faith” • Not by faith alone • Noah obey all of God’s instructions and commands – Gen. 6: 22 – “Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so he did. ”. 3

God Put Water… • Between Israel and Bondage! – Israel was saved by water – Pharaoh’s army was destroyed by water – Their faith that motivated to cross the red sea saved them • Ex. 14: 29 -31 – Paul said they were “baptized” • Covered by the cloud and the sea – 1 Cor. 10: 1 -2 –”Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea”. 4

God Put Water… • Between Naaman and his cleansing! – Naaman commanded to wash: • “Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean” (2 Kings 5: 10). – His arguing did him no good! • “Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (vs. 14). 5

God Put Water… • Between the blind man and his seeing! – “And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent. ) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing” (Jn. 9: 7). – Commanded – “Go, wash” – His faith was tested by the Lord. • He passed the test! 6

God Put Water… • Between Saul (Paul) and salvation! – The Lord told him: • “And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do” (Acts 9: 6). – Ananias asked: • “And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22: 16). 7

Water and Salvation… • Peter commanded: – “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2: 38). • Jesus commanded: – “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned” (Mk. 16: 16). – “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matt. 28: 19 -20). • Eunuch’s question: – “See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized” (Acts 8: 36)? 9
