What is the purpose of Group 4 (G 4) Project? It is a collaborative activity where students from different G 4 subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) work together on a scientific topic, allowing for concepts and perceptions from across the disciplines to be shared. 2
Aims of the G 4 Experimental Sciences addressed by the project are; to develop and apply your information and communication technology skills in the study of science, (Aim 7) ü to raise your awareness of the moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology, (Aim 8) ü to encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method. (Aim 10) ü 3
What you do during this work; q. Decide the main focus, make sure that all the subjects are included. Decide which practical activities you will carry out and what equipment you will need… You should communicate your requests to the appropriate science technician and teacher. q Keep communicating among yourselves… You need to let others in your group know how your part of the project is going! q 4
Project Stages 10 hour activity is allocated to the G 4 project which can be divided into three stages: • • • Planning (2 hrs) Action (6 hrs) Evaluation (2 hrs) 5
Planning q This stage must involve all G 4 students meeting to “brainstorming” and discuss the central topic, sharing ideas and information. q The topic of this year has been chosen by the G 4 teachers of our school as SCHOOL CLEANING AND CLEANERS. q Then, students must decide what subtitle they will study during G 4 project. q The research questions of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) must be as related as possible. 6
Planning q All investigations should be simple enough to be carried out in school lab conditions. q Next, the activities that will be carried out must be clearly defined. q At the experimental stage, all the apparatus should be specified so that there is no delay in carrying out the action stage. q The experiments should provide enough quantitative data to be analyzed statistically. (At least three trials for each independent variable value) 7
Planning Ø There are 160 IB students. Ø There will be 25 groups containing 6 students and 2 groups containing 5 students. Ø At least one student must be from Turkish. Mathematics (TM) field. Ø It is your responsibility to build your groups. Ø Each group will have a team leader. Ø Team leader is responsible for coordination but not doing all the work. 8
Research Question (RQ) q Great research starts with good questions. (Avoid questions that can not be answered) q State your RQ clearly. Dependent and independent variables must be stated in the RQ and controlled variables if necessary. q Ensure that the RQ is sharply focused. 9
Common errors made by students q Not stating the RQ (dependent and independent variables) clearly. q Stating multiple RQs. q Stating a RQ that is too broad. q Stating a RQ which does not lead to a systematic investigation. 10
Some RQ examples 11
RQ Examples: Physics q How is the angle of deflection affects the rate of photosynthesis of Elodea canadensis. q The correct form of the RQ is; “how is the angle of deflection affects the rate of photosynthesis of Elodea canadensis by measuring the volume of produced oxygen gas”. 12
RQ Examples: Chemistry q How does the exposure to light affect the Vitamin C in orange juice by determining the vitamin C content by titrating it with iodine solution. q The correct form of the RQ is; “how does the time of exposure to sunlight affect the decomposition of Vitamin C in orange juice by determining the vitamin C content by titrating it with iodine solution. ” 13
RQ Examples: Biology q How does light affect the rate of photosynthesis, by counting the number of produced oxygen bubbles q The correct form of the RQ is; “how do different wavelengths of light affect the rate of photosynthesis of Elodea canadensis, by counting the number of produced oxygen bubbles” 14
How a subtitle can be related with G 4 subjects? Here is an example from G 4 project of last year: Last year school topic was “Water. “ A group of students picked the subtitle “Conductivity of Water" 15
How a subtitle can be related with G 4 subjects? Example from G 4 project of last year: In Physics, students investigated “How does the In Chemistry, students investigated “How does In Biology, students investigated “How does the type of water affect the conductivity of water the concentration of sodium cloride (Na. Cl) affect type of water affect the transport in xylem of indicated by the potential difference that is the volume of hydrogen collected during Apium graveolens which is indicated by the shown in voltmeter using a simple electric circuit electrolysis process? ” height of water at a certain temperature and metal plates? ” pressure? ” 16

Young Reporters For The Environment (YRE) q At the end of your G 4 project, you are responsible for writing an article to be published in the journal of YRE. q You are not responsible for preparing an investigation report such as DCP or CE. 26
Young Reporters For The Environment (YRE) q While writing your article, you should behave like a journalist. q The purpose in writing this article is not explaining the process or result of the experiment. q The purpose is to explain the conclusion of the experiment by relating it with the environmental implications in an attractive way as a journalist. 27
The aim of a journalist is to be read. So, It’s your job ; Ø to convince your readers that they should read your article from beginning to the end. Ø to take them by the hand, Ø to seduce them, Ø to guide them along your text and leave them with a good feeling. Ø to get the attention of your readers. 28
You are considered as a specialist of your topic! Hunt in your articles any reference to Ø persons, Ø places, Ø organisations, that you have not initially introduced , located or explained. 29
Illustrate your article! q A picture is worth a thousand words. 30
The Choice of Words q Use words that are short, simple and precise. q Find a title that is attractive, funny, provocative to catch the attention of your readers. q Scientific and technical words are not immediately understood by the readers. Do not use too many technical words at a time. q Avoid using too many figures. q Try using percentages rather than absolute numbers. 31
You may ask; www. youngreporters. org (official web site of YRE organisation) Are there any examples of and also articles that can give some ideas you will be given some examples about how to write an article? of articles on the days of data collection (15 -16 January) 32
Our school subject this year is SCHOOL CLEANING AND CLEANERS 33
Eco Friendly Cleaning is Great! 34
Do you use chemicals for cleaning? Chemicals are all around you! q It is a smart move to use eco friendly cleaning products. q Environment friendly items greatly reduce vulnerability to probably poisonous chemicals in contrast to their chemical based cousins. q this signifies your youngsters may likely display less signs associated with asthma, skin irritations and eye irritations around the house. q The health issues (such as cancer) that may be caused by commercial cleansing products make us shudder 35
Thankfully individuals just about all over the world tend to be starting to go green. q Items with toxic chemical compounds are generally being banished from homes, classes and workplaces just about everywhere you look. q Getting your hands on eco friendly cleaners is easy to perform. 36
Here are some effortless methods you can use, to clean with no chemicals. 37
Try to make your own eco-friendly cleanser (you'll find simple and affordable elements you can use; baking soda and vinegar are two of the most effective. ) 38
If it says toxin in the labels, think again from buying it. Check out if there's a natural alternative. 39
Volatile Organic Compounds (known as VOC’s) are hard on individuals who have asthma. They're discovered in numerous aerosol sprays, air fresheners and cleaners. You might need to avoid these. Choose spray pump type products over aerosols – the accelerants can worsen asthma symptoms. 40
Whenever in doubt search for the Environmentally Friendly Seal or the Eco Logo stamp of approval. Such labels approve the merchandise has been subject to independent testing. 41
Do not buy products when the ingredients are not listed on the label. It is because they do not like you to understand what ingredients are being used. 42
Lastly, if you need to use a substance for cleaning. Make sure that you only use one type of substance. Mixing different types of cleaning products might be dangerous, specially if it contains chlorine. 43
q. Needless to state you'll find a large number of good reasons for you to turn to eco friendly cleaning merchandise. q. Environmental considerations aside, the outcomes on your health may well be significant. 44
