What is journalism?
Journalism is gathering, processing, and dissemination of news and information related to the news to an audience. In modern society, the news media is the chief purveyor of information.
“Journalism has already come to be the first power in the land” Samuel Bowles “Literature is the art of writing something that will be read twice; journalism what will be grasped at once” Cyril Connolly “Journalism is literature in a hurry” Matthew Arnold “Journalism can never be silent: that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault” Henry Anatole Grunwald “Journalism without a moral position is impossible. Every journalist is a moralist. It’s absolutely unavoidable. A journalist is someone who looks at the world and the way it works, someone who takes a close look at things every day and reports what she sees, someone who represents the world, the event, for others. She cannot do her work without judging what she sees” Marguerite Duras
The modern journalism consists of 4 areas: areas 1. print journalism 2. television journalism 3. radio journalism 4. online journalism
1. Print Journalism or Periodical Publications popular Periodicals can be classified into two types: Periodical publication (a periodical) is a published work that appears in a new edition on a regular schedule v Newspapers v Magazines v Newsletters v Literary journals v Academic journals v Yearbooks and scholarly
2. Television journalism TV is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting moving images and sound. Television can transmit images that are monochrome, in color, or in three dimensions. The name television can refer specifically to a television set, a television program, or the medium of television transmission. Television is an iconic mass medium, serving as a conduit for entertainment, advertising and news.
3. Radio journalism Radio is the radiation of electromagnetic signals through the atmosphere or free space. Radio waves can carry information, such as sound, by systematically changing some property of the radiated waves, such as their amplitude, frequency, phase, or pulse width. When radio waves strike an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. The information in the waves can be extracted and transformed back into its original form.
4. Online journalism Digital journalism also known as online journalism is a contemporary form of journalism where editorial content is distributed via the Internet as opposed to publishing via print or broadcast. What constitutes 'digital journalism' is debated by scholars. However the primary product of journalism, which is news and features on current affairs, is presented solely or in combination as text, audio, video and some interactive forms, and disseminated through digital media platforms. Fewer barriers to entry, lowered distribution costs, and diverse computer networking technologies have led to the widespread practice of digital journalism. It has democratized the flow of information that was previously controlled by traditional media including newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. Some have asserted that greater degree of creativity can be exercised with digital journalism when compared to traditional journalism and traditional media. The digital aspect may be central to the journalistic message and remains, to some extent, within the creative control of the writer, editor or publisher.
As for me, I like TV journalism and I want to be a special correspondent or TV anchor. It’s my really dream.
