What is E 15? E 15 is a blend of gasoline and up to 15 vol% ethanol. Prior to EPA's October waiver decision, the amount of ethanol in motor vehicle gasoline was limited to 10 vol% (E 10). E 10 was granted a waiver under Clean Air Act section 211(f)(4) more than 30 years ago and is now ubiquitous in the marketplace, making up over 90% of the U. S. gasoline market. The primary source of ethanol is corn, but other grains or biomass sources may be used as feed stock s
What Vehicles May Use E 15?
What Vehicles May NOT Use E 15? All motorcycles motorcycle All vehicles with heavy-duty engines, such as school buses, transit buses, and delivery trucks All off-road vehicles, such as boats and snowmobiles All engines in off-road equipment, such as lawnmowers and chain saws All MY 2000 and older cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty passenger vehicles (SUVs)
Federal Legislation Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 Significantly increases the amount of biofuels, such as ethanol, to be used in transportation fuel.
EPA and DOT Move E 10 and E 15 Gas Blend
AAA there are 169, 000 gas stations in the US and 20, 000 are selling E-15.
AAA Most auto and motorcycle manufactures will not honor warranties when the engine is damaged by E-15 and the fuel providers, do not seem to be standing behind their product.
Motorcycle Industry Council. 15 percent blend could affect engine durability and deterioration. Banned motorcycles from using the blend No legal resource for blown out bike engines due to the use of E 15.
Concerns from the AMA E 15 burns hotter than E 10, creating potential engine damage, especially in air cooled engines, and high performance, water cooled engines. Street and off road motorcycles and ATVs Ethanol based fuels are hygroscopic Absorbs moisture and can hold more water than traditional fuels
AMA opposes EPA remedy The EPA proposed a 4 gallon purchase requirement, as a solution to dilute the residual ethanol.
Concerns from the AMA Many motorcycle tanks don't hold four gallons, making it impossible for riders to legally fill their tanks
Why not just avoid buying E 15? Potential for misfueling Blender pumps contain multiple grades of gasoline dispensed through a single hose, in a single pump. Residual fuel left in the hose from the previous user, inadvertently allows for cross contamination with E 15.
Most motorists don't know the difference between E 10 and regular gasoline.

Possible solutions House Committee Approves HR 875 Ethanol Study Bill, requiring the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct a comprehensive study on the E-15 gasoline fuel blends. The committee approved the bill, , by a vote of 18 -17.
What Can You Do? The AMA and MRF strongly urge motorcycle riders to avoid E 15, until it has been proven safe for motorcycles, and Take action now.
Federal Legislation HR 875 would direct the EPA to do more research on the effects of e-15 blends, and halt the sale of E-15 Authored by Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI-5) this bill passed out of committee last May SB 344 would prohibit the sale of gasoline containing more than 10% ethanol blends to be used in light duty vehicles authored by states
