Just when we get comfortable and think we have learned all that we need to know to be successful at our jobs, we find out that we still have more to learn. Continual learning does not stop with graduation, getting a degree or earning one more certification. I emphasize to each of my clients the importance of on-going professional development. So to that point, I put into practice what I preach. This summer I completed a 4 week certification in Everything Di. SC Workplace and a 2 week supplement to The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team called The All Types of a Cohesive Team, which incorporates a styles indicator to identify the type of person you are. The good news is that not only have I increased my repertoire of tools, but these certifications are now available to any of you who wish to earn a facilitation certificate. If you are a trainer in your company or organization and would like to earn a certification in a specific tool, just give me a call and we can select the certification best suited to your needs. -- Anna Weselak DISC FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Here is another question that we are frequently asked about the history of DISC : Q: When was DISC first developed? A: The DISC theory was first published in a book called The Emotions of Normal People in 1928. The author of the book was Dr. William Marston who was a corporate psychologist for DC Comics and creator of Wonder Woman, under the pen name of Charles Moulton. Although theory was developed in the 1920’s, the measurement of DISC styles did not occur until the DISC scales were developed in the 1970’s, long after Marston’s death in 1947. WHO TRAINS THE MANAGERS? Many clients are experiencing the need to hire new staff. WHO TRAINS THE MANAGERS? Many clients are experiencing the need to hire new staff. This is great news and means organizations are growing. If you have benchmarked the job and know you are hiring employees who are a good fit for the job, you now need to assign those new hires to a manager. How do you find the right manager? Generally, most organizations “reward” a successful, hardworking employee to become a manager of his or her department or team. This follows the logic that if an employees has a proven track record of success this employee can now teach direct reports how to be successful. This new manager may have the knowledge to be a great manager, but does a new manager have the skills to be a manager? The majority of managers walk into their new positions with no training of how to be an effective manager. They typically manage how they were managed. Some may receive coaching from their manager or executive officer, but it is seldom ongoing or effective and the manager can become frustrated. If this sounds like your company or organization, give us a call today and we will be happy to help train your managers to be successful so their direct reports will be successful too! Then watch your company grow! BOOK CORNER Frequent conversations can be heard about Millennials who are now entering the work force. They are being compared mostly to the “Boomers” who are their bosses or the executives of the company. If you are a Millennial who is curious about working with Boomers, or if you are a Boomer curious to know what makes a Millennial tick, this book is just for you in a surprising format! Millennials vs. Boomers takes on both perspectives to help these generations to listen, learn and succeed together. Written by Erick Harvey and Silvana Clark, it is a must read for all generations! JUST FOR EDUCATORS My oldest grandson started Kindergarten this Fall. As he shared his first days of school with me, it reminded me that so much of what we learn in Kindergarten makes us successful in the work that we do. John told me that he needs to share and let everyone take a turn. Each table needs a captain and when leaving the room the class needs a leader to keep them in line. He tells me that they read every day so they can learn more and more. And when he does math, it makes him think. None of the students in his class were from his preschool or soccer team so he is busy making new friends. Of course he like recess when he can play and run with those new friends. So how does this relate to a work environment? We need to take turns and listen to what everyone has to say. We need responsible leaders who can take us to new heights. Continuous learning and the ability to think bring fresh ideas and new techniques. New staff bring new opportunities to work and play together. John is having a great Kindergarten year and hopefully he will continue to apply all that he is learning in Kindergarten. Let us also be reminded to practice what we learned in Kindergarten.
