LOCAL FOOD Filipino food has a wide variety with Spanish, Chinese & American influences ADOBO is the national food with pork or chicken meat soaked in soy sauce, vinegar pepper, sugar and garlic. LECHE FLAN is also a great dessert! (Nadia’s favorite) Filipino foods in general is very tasty (it may be too salty or sweet to the Western taste-bud. Feeling adventurous? Try BALUT (duck embryo) a world famous Philippine delicacy! *It has to be eaten at night.
LOCAL PEOPLE Filipinos are considered as one of the happiest people on Earth. A group of *Pinoys laugh every 5 seconds. Observe and find out if it’s true. *slang for Filipinos are very welcoming to tourists. “White” foreigners are often called “Joe” referring to the American soldiers. Don’t freak out when people smile or stare at you in the streets. They are just happy to see you. Remember, they are happy people.
DO’S AND DON’TS WHEN SHOPPING: Always bargain by saying – “LAST PRICE? ” It means please lower the cost. They usually give 5 – 20% discount Don’t buy pearls in Bohol. You can buy good pearls at KULTURA store inside SM Mall of Asia (MOA) in Manila Sunglasses & Massage people will bug you to death. Just say “no, thank you” firmly and walk away. *Shades at 3 euros and Massage by the beach is at 5 euros.
DO’S AND DON’TS We don’t recommend driving MOTORBIKES in Bohol. It is an accident waiting to happen. Cars & Vans/Bus may be rented. You must reserve ahead of time. Ask Cozy regarding group tours (to follow). You may take pictures of local people but ask permission first. If they smile, then it’s OK (which means it might always be OK because they always smile).
DO’S AND DON’TS WHEN EATING/DRINKING: Never drink tap water unless you want to spoil your fun. Bring along your bottled water. Nature Springs is the cheapest. Don’t drink with ice (unless at Panglao Regents Park). Ordering smoothies/shakes is safe at your hotel (Panglao Regents) or at Alona Tropical Beach restaurant. Best to stay away from seashells or oysters.
