The Orientation Process: Introductions and Announcements with some “key messages” n Processing: Go to EVERY station, even if you think you’ve completed already n Day #1 Afternoon: Competency Focus n Orientation Day #2 is mandatory for ALL house officers (7: 30 a. m. ) n No work/no pay until you have a MS license n Come to the Welcome Luncheon at Noon on Day #1! n
New House Officer Top 10 List Ten Hints for Successful, Happy Survival as a House Officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center
Hint # 1: Stay in touch! Read your UMMC e-mail daily! n Make sure your program, and the GME office, have current home phone numbers and addresses at all times. n Learn to TYPE if you don’t know how! n
Hint # 2: You are both an employee AND a physician-in-training. Student loan deferments are now handled through your department / residency program. n The Registrar’s Office (Student Services) continues to maintain records for eventual credentialing and licensing. n Absenteeism may now result in financial loss or dismissal. n
Hint # 3: Big Brother is watching you! HIPAA means being very careful with patient information. n Patient care information should be accessed on a “need-to-know” basis only. n Campus computers are for patient care, education, research, and communication: avoid frivolous e-mail, surfing inappropriate web sites, etc. n
Hint #4: Medical Records are a DAILY reality… Dictate op notes, DC summaries same day. n Sign electronic notes and visit incomplete medical records at least weekly. n Don’t use unacceptable abbreviations. n Never forget, the medical record is a LEGAL document. n If you don’t write it down, it didn’t happen. n If they can’t read it, you might as well not bother writing it down! n
Hint #5: Know the scoop on “duty hours. ” n 80 hours/week n 4 days off / month n 10 hours off between shifts n Call no more often than every 3 rd night n 24 + 6 hours maximum in hospital n Beware of moonlighting… n The GME office and program will monitor
Hint # 6: You are now a professional. Act like one! n Commit to service−Patients come first! n Commit to compassion. n Commit to integrity. n Commit to excellence in all you do. n Respect others. n Dress appropriately; bathe regularly. n Return your library books!
Hint # 7: Physician “competency” has been defined. n Medical Knowledge n Patient Care n Professionalism n Communication Skills n Practice-Based Learning and Improvement n Systems-Based Learning
Hint # 8: The best physicians are skilled learners. n You won’t know it all when you finish training, and even if you do, it will change! n Plan to develop life-long learning habits.
Hint # 9: The best physicians are good teachers. n Teach your patients. n Teach your students. n Teach your colleagues. n Serve on committees as asked.
