Reader’s Workshop The children will practice the reading skills they learn in school during our Reader’s Workshop time and nightly at home. In a few weeks, I will start sending book bags home with your child so they can read the same books at school and at home. Please send the book bag in daily. Book bags will not go home over the weekend.
Just Right Books As part of Reader’s Workshop I am teaching the second graders how to choose a just right book. It’s a just right book if… ü I can read almost all the words ü It’s interesting ü I can understand it. For a student to read a book independently they need to be able to read 99% of the words on their own. Please listen in as your child reads to monitor for accuracy and comprehension.

Spelling • Encourage invented spelling or sounding out words (research shows it helps children become better spellers) • It’s better to have student misspell “juicy words” than write only words they can spell • Encourage correct spelling of words they can copy or common sight words • Students can sound out words and underline them to check later

Math Facts ü Goal: Fluently add & subtract within 20 ü Practice, practice! ü Throughout the year I will be assigning different homework activities to help your child learn his or her facts ü Although we practice math facts in school, your child’s success is strongly dependent upon your support at home. Your child should be studying and reinforcing their math fact knowledge at home. ü Learning these facts will make solving more challenging math problems easier
