Specials Schedule /Specials /Silver- 9: 25 -9: 55 Fine Arts (Music/Art) /Green- Gym (Please be sure to send gym shoes on P. E. days. Students may also leave some here if you would prefer. ) /Look for schedule in weekly newsletter

Computers /Every Monday we will go to the computer lab. /Your child will practice math skills and language arts skills through a myriad of games and computer programs (Kid Pix, IXL, Raz-Kids, and Tumble Books) /Please make sure your child has brought in headphones.

/25 Birthdays students /No snacks /Announcement, certificate /Invites /25 crowns, pencil and or all same gender /11 boys, 14 girls (Please let me know if you need a class list)

Snack and Milk /Every morning we will have snack around 11: 00 a. m. /Please bring healthy snacks /If you have not received the sign-up sheet for snack milk, please let me know. /Water bottles are allowed in class

/Check Homework weekly Assignment Log /Homework possible Monday-Thursday /Read daily /Home Links (Math homework) /Spelling/Language Arts homework /Choose one spelling activity each night Monday. Thursday to practice spelling words. /Don’t need to turn in work, just record activity on homework log and sign and return every Friday. /See weekly study guide for spelling words and vocab. words to practice.

Grades /We work in trimesters at Spencer Pointe, so 3 report cards will come home throughout the year. /Conferences-1 st trimester /Grades given are B (Beginning), D (Developing), and S (Secure)

“Student of the Week” /“All About Me” poster /I will send a note home when it is your child’s turn /May bring in things to share (e. g. trophies, medals, pictures etc. )

Second Grade Curriculum /Language Arts Our Language Arts series is called Storytown. It includes the subject areas of Phonics, Reading, Grammar, and Spelling. • • • Phonics Skills: The students will learn about short and long vowels, r-controlled vowels, syllable patterns, consonant blends, digraphs, dipthongs, contractions, suffixes, prefixes, homonyms, antonyms and synonyms. Reading: Students will be learning about different genres, comprehension skills and strategies, and vocabulary Grammar: Students will be learning about parts of speech and grammar rules. In addition, we will cover three kinds of writing: narrative, expository and persuasive.

Spelling / We will be using the Storytown spelling this year. /Coincides with phonics skill each week. /Introduce words on Mondays /Test on Fridays-this is the grade reflected on report cards /Students have a chance to try the challenge words for bonus points each week /In addition to Storytown spelling, we will be learning and practicing the 2 nd grade core words. These are high frequency words that students should know how to spell, read and write. Not on report card

Math /Every /Spiral Day Math Program /Whole number operation, time, money, place value, patterns & rules, fractions, measurement, & decimals /Family Letters will be sent home- answers to HL /Home Links-Should be expected Monday-Thursday; please return the following day so we can go over it in class

Handwriting /Focus Without Tears on printing /Cursive introduced in third grade

Science & Social Studies /Science / Our Science series is by Scott Foresman. We will supplement our current curriculum with World in Motion to meet the STEM standards. We study animals and plants, properties of matter, energy, forces and motion and sound. This series gives students opportunities to learn through hands on experiments. /Social / Our Studies series is Pearson and we will study the following /Maps/Geography /Directions /Landforms /Natural Resources /History
