Welcome to Perm
Perm is the most Eastern city of Europe, and therefore its province is often referred to as Eurasia. Many foreigners are sure, that in the Urals’ towns bears walk in the streets. This is one of them. The figure of a bear is represented on the State Emblem of Perm
Perm is internationally known as the name for the geological period (290 - 245 million years ago) in which the Ural Mountain Range was formed.
In contrary to the Urals, Perm itself is rather young. Although the first settlement of Perm dates back to 16 th century, officially it got its city status in 1723 Citizens celebrate Perm's birthday on 12 th of June, with street parades, concerts and fireworks throughout the whole city!
Our city owes its existence to Vasiliy Tatishchev (1686 -1750), who is believed to be the founder of Perm. In 1723 he planned and supervised the construction of the Yegoshikhinsky Copper Works and founded a factory near the small river Yegoshikha, a tributary of the Kama.
Perm is situated on the two large rivers – the Kama and the Chusovaya. The major part of the city stretches along the Kama for 65 km. Perm has an area of 720 sq km. Its population is over 1, 000.
In summer Kama Sea is a great place for rest In winter Kama reservoir freezes and becomes one of the best places for snowkiting in Perm
“Salty ears” At the end of the 18 th century the most popular Perm product was salt which was extracted in the Perm Province, in Usolye and Solikamsk. It is said that at the Perm dockers carried this "white gold" in enormous sacks on their backs, and their ears were often covered with salt. That is why Perm citizens were often called "permyak - salty ears". There is even a special monument, where everyone can take a picture of themselves.
Trans Siberian Railroad In 1863 part of the Siberian railroad was built in Perm. At the end of the 19 century it was prolonged up to Eastern Siberia to connect the West and the East of the country.
In 1863 the Motovilikha Plant was founded and became the largest in the Urals. Apart from weapons for the Russian army, there were also produced steam ships, engines, etc. Today the plant produces engines for planes, parts for electric trains and other machines
Furthermore, Russian orthodox churches, a mosque, a synagogue and several Catholic churches (some dating from the 17 th century) all exist next to each other in Perm.
One of the most famous stages is Chaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre. Among its repertoire there are internationally known performances (for example Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra, Aida, Cinderella) as well as Russian ones: most works of Tchaikovsky have been staged here. Since 1948 Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre has been on tours throughout the whole world, performing in countries such as UK, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany and China. During its history, theatre has received numerous (inter)national prizes.
The annual Ice sculpture contest “Snow, Ice and Flame” is held in the central park. Sculptors from different countries take part in this show.
Another leading stage is Perm Academic Drama Theatre, founded in 1927. Like the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Acamedic Drama Theatre has staged the world’s most prestigious Drama plays (for instance Ostrovsky, Shakespeare, Gorky and Tolstoy) and has it won many prizes for its work.
Perm Art Gallery owns a large collection of arts. Apart from numerous paintings of Flemish, French and Italian masters, it also has modern art collections on exhibition. It is located in a former cathedral, now a landmark of Perm in the centre of the city. In the gallery you can see a unique collection of Perm wooden sculpture, which is a phenomenon of Russian Orthodox Art. It was spread only in Perm region.
“Khokhlovka” (Open-air museum of Wooden Architecture and Ethnography) is in fact a collection of original structures as they existed in the 17 th century. Inside the buildings, all kinds of tools, handicrafts and clothes of that time are exposed. The guide will take you around the museum, explaining about the hard life 300 years ago.
Several unique natural objects can be found near Perm. One of them is Kungur Ice Cave, which is located in 100 km from Perm. This is the only cave in Russia that is prepared for excursions. It’s the world’s sixth longest gypsum cave (5600 m). There are 60 lakes in this cave.
