A prayer of praise

A prayer of praise Creator God, We praise and worship You For all that You are and for all that You have done. You set this world in motion; You give the breath of life to every living thing; You give us the gifts of time and space So that we can make sense of the world.

A prayer of praise God the Son, We praise and worship You. By Your coming to live amongst us You give worth and dignity to all humanity. Through the diverse people who played a part In the story of Your birth, We learn that all people can find acceptance in You.

A prayer of praise God the Holy Spirit, We praise and worship You have drawn each of us here tonight, And You have things to say to us. Speak to us through the old familiar story, So that as we listen again to something that we know so well, We may discover afresh what it means To be loved by You.

A prayer of praise Gracious God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, We praise and worship You, Now and for ever. Amen

Isaiah 11: 1 -9 The Branch From Jesse 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD— 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.

Isaiah 11: 1 -9 He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist.

Long ago, prophets knew Christ would come, born a Jew, Come to make all things new; Bear His people's burden, Freely love and pardon:

Luke 1: 26 -38

Luke 1: 26 -38 The Birth of Jesus Foretold 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you. ”

Luke 1: 26 -38 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; his kingdom will never end. ”

Matthew 1: 18 -25

Matthew 1: 18 -25 Joseph accepts Jesus as his son 18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: his mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 9 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

Matthew 1: 18 -25 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. ’

Luke 2: 1 -7

Luke 2: 1 -7 The Birth of Jesus 1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (2 This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria. ) 3 And everyone went to his own to register.

Luke 2: 1 -7 4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

Luke 2: 1 -7 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Luke 2. 17 -20 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

Matthew 2: 1 -8

Matthew 2: 1 -8 The Visit of the Magi 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. ”

Matthew 2: 1 -8 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. 5 In Bethlehem in Judea, they replied, for this is what the prophet has written:

Matthew 2: 1 -8 6'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel. '

A prayer for others

A prayer for others Gracious God, The snapshots that we have seen tonight Have been so familiar; Mary's obedience; Joseph's change of heart; The response of the innkeeper; the wonder of the shepherds; the homage of the wise men.

A prayer for others As we consider the Christmas story, Help us to look beyond the well-known pictures, And to enter into the reality Of all that happened during that first Christmas season.

A prayer for others Then give us grace to respond in obedience to your call, To take in all that you have done with renewed wonder, And to bring our humble worship To Jesus, born in a stable, our Lord and our Saviour. Amen
