Lesson 3 Classifiers
Lesson 3 Classifiers are handshapes that are used to represent certain groups of things, and when combined with location, orientation, movement, and non-manual markers can become nouns, pronouns, verbs, or adjectives. Movement and facial expression play key roles in the use of classifiers. Care should be taken when learning to use classifiers so that the appropriate classifier is chosen and used correctly. The best way to learn this art is by watching Deaf people in conversations and story telling.

The gazed at one another, and walked away together.

Lesson 3: Practice Sentences n n A car was tailgating me last night, so I pulled over to let it pass but it just pulled along side of me and then got behind me again. I was walking home yesterday and a little dog started following me. When I got home the dog just sat outside of my door all night. Last winter I was skiing a very steep slope and my ski pole broke. My history book is huge, but my English book doesn’t have many pages.

The face on my watch is really dirty. I need to wash it. We don’t need large plates, just some small saucers will be fine. I was walking alone at night and became very nervous, because I felt that someone was following me. Everytime I turned around no one was there. I began to walk faster and faster until finally I reached my apartment, and rushed in and slammed the door.

Lesson 3: Practice Test n n n My friend and I were riding bikes down a hill. I hit a hole in the road and my bike flipped. I had scratches all over and my knee was bleeding badly. I was walking along talking with my friend. I wasn’t looking where I was going. I ran into a pole. On Valentines Day we were having a nice family dinner at home. The table was really pretty with glasses and plates and candles and roses. We began eating and the two-year-old decided to take a closer look at one of the roses. She then put it too close to the candle and it caught on fire.
Lesson 3: Practice Test n During Thanksgiving I went skiing at Beaver. I went down a really steep slope. I was skiing and there was a woman who was going really slow at the bottom of the slope. I tried to miss her but we hit each other and she broke her leg.

The speed limit was 25, but I was going 49, and the ticket cost $96. 00. My library books were 2 weeks late, so I had to pay $3. 85 fine. My son has a part time job and he makes $6. 50 an hour.

Lesson 5: Practice Sentences n n n I am fed up with you two arguing all the time. Do you agree with the team’s decision? Students feel a lot of pressure during final exam week. Are you anxious for spring break? John is anxious about his responsibilities as a new father. I have a problem with my schedule next semester. Do you trust your advisor? You look confused. Don’t worry later you will understand. The teacher would not (refuse) accept my paper late. I cant figure out why (puzzled) you always dwell on the past. My teacher has many years of experience.
Lesson 5: Practice Sentences n n n Coaches have a lot of influence on their players. Stop being silly and pay attention. Some parents don’t care if their kids try drugs. College tuition is expensive. I am concerned about affording it. Do you know about the Gallaudet protest? His goal is to join the football team. My dad is really accustomed to warm water. You have got to stop that habit of procrastinating. That man is an expert and you should show him respect. Parents and teachers need to cooperate. I am going to hire him regardless of his limited experience.
Lesson 5: Practice Sentences n n n Why was your dad fired? The teachers were all united in their decision to strike. If you cant come to the meeting, it’s alright. I’m dreaming of a better day. The newspaper reported that tuition would decrease. I seriously doubt that will happen.

The volleyball team is excellent but lately, they’ve been losing. Players feel terrible. In our country we believe in equal rights and freedom. I have been waiting forever to see the doctor. I give up ! What is our goal in this war. Do you feel that goal can be met?
Lesson 5: Practice Sentences n n Graduate students are competing for jobs, but the jobs won’t hire them because they don’t have enough experience. Where I grew up the summers were so hot. It got above 95 degrees every day for 3 months. When you were a kid, did you have to memorize the names of the presidents? I remember feeling stress trying to memorize them all in order. My brother’s goal is to be principal of a school, but he needs a lot of experience teaching first.

The university president and board of trustees aren’t cooperating. My parents don’t like to come during Thanksgiving. It’s too cold and they aren’t used to it. My brother tried to make the basketball team but he didn’t make it.
