Ways to earn Hawk Bucks · $1 Hawk Buck will be given for each green on a weekly basis · $5 in Hawk Bucks will be given for each parent signature on the PBIS calendar, given on a weekly basis · $20 in Hawk Bucks will be given to each student who has a pennant left at the end of the quarter · Hawk Bucks will also be given at the teacher’s discretion for things such as helping to clean up the classroom or helping someone · Students will have the opportunity to earn Hawk Bucks throughout the quarter to participate in the quarterly classroom event. Each event and “extras” will have a set cost and students who have collected the necessary amounts will be able to “purchase” the opportunity to attend the event and buy extras that he or she wishes to have.

Homework Policy · Homework is to be returned on the due date. The due date will always be listed on the homework assignment. Homework assignments are worth 5 points. · Homework that is not completed and turned in the morning on the day that it is due will result in your child spending one recess inside completing the homework. Late homework will be given 2. 5 points. · 2 nd grade is a transitional time regarding homework. Homework expectations will change once students enter 3 rd grade.

Grading Scale · Letter grades will be given on daily work, projects and tests · The report card will contain letter grades for subject matter(A, B, C, D, F). The letter grades reflect work ethic and performance.

Reading • Reading consists of shared reading and guided reading. • Shared reading is focused on the comprehension strategies. All students hear the same texts and apply the comprehension strategies. • Guided reading is focused on individualized reading lessons at each child’s instructional reading level.

Guided Reading · As students make progress, they will move to a group that is appropriate for their level · Students may meet with a group in a different classroom in order to meet their individual needs · As students begin to read chapter books, they will be a member of a “book club. ” They will be responsible for reading their assignment independently to prepare for group discussions · During Guided Reading time, students will work on independent practice center activities when not meeting with a group · Expectation for the end of 2 nd grade is for all students to read at a DRA level 28 or higher (independently)

Spelling · Spelling lists will come from our Spelling Connections books · Spelling lists will consist of 10 words.

Grammar · Homework given once a week that practices the week’s grammar skill. · Assessed on Friday

Writing · Step Up to Writing: · This is the writing tool we use that focuses on making the writing process simple and easy to remember. Students will become familiar with the 3 main elements in expository writing by relating them to colors- green, yellow and red.

Expository Writing · Green – Topic Sentence: The main idea of the paragraph · Yellow – Subtopic: Give the reader the fact that relates to and supports the topic sentence, using transition words. (first, second, third) · Red – Details: Give the reader an example or reason for the subtopic. · Green – Conclusion: The topic is restated. (in conclusion or as you can see)

Math • Go Math! offers an engaging and interactive approach to covering the Common Core State Standards. Our GO Math! Student Edition is write-in, so students record their strategies, explanations, solutions, practice and test prep right in their books. And, it comes with the Standards Practice Book which will be the book used for homework assignments that go along with the math lessons.
