Ontario University Admission Requirements OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) ü 18 compulsory courses ü 12 elective courses ü Successful completion of OSSLT (Grade 10 Literacy Test) ü 40 Hours of Community Involvement (Not-for-profit organization)

Ontario University Admission Requirements Grade 12 U/M courses ü ENG 4 U – always required ü 5 other Grade 12 courses, depending on the pre-requisites of the program/university ü Different universities might require different pre-requisites for the same program; Students must check websites/e-info/viewbooks to check requirements

Admission Requirement Myths • grade 11 marks • academic vs. applied courses (in grades 9 and 10) • university/mixed/college/open courses (in grades 11 and 12) • early acceptance

Language Requirements • must write English proficiency test if in a non -English-instructional high-school for less than 4 full years (but should check each university website) • every institution has its own due dates and scores • write early so you can re-write if necessary • TOEFL i. The Application Process The Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC)

The Application Process OUAC is the clearing house for all Ontario university applications

The Application Process · Fee: $150 for 3 universities or programs · Each additional choice: $50 (no limit to number of choices) · Example: 2 programs at any one university = 2 choices

The Application Process · Limit of 3 choices at any one university including affiliated colleges · OUAC provides grades to Quebec Universities, Dalhousie, King’s College, U. B. C, and Victoria University but it is not the clearing house for applications to those universities

Timelines November 1 st • First electronic transmission date to OUAC • Application for each applicant is created: ØDemographics ØCompleted Gr. 11 courses with final grades ØCompleted Gr. 12 courses with final grades (e. g. summer school) ØCurrent courses ØSuccessful completion of the Gr. 10 Literacy Test ØCompletion of Community Involvement hours • PIN for each applicant is created and sent to the school

Timelines Application Deadline: January 17 th, 2017 Recommended time for applications: Mid-December

Timelines February 5 th • Recommended last date to submit changes • Changes processed continuously – each university has a deadline after which no changes/applications will be accepted

Timelines April 23 • Third electronic transmission to OUAC • Mid-term marks for all grade 11 and 12 courses • Additional information on the transcript since the November transmission (e. g. completion of community involvement, final grades for completed private school courses)

Timelines First Week of July • Next electronic transmission to OUAC • Final grades • Additional information on the transcript since the April transmission (e. g. completion of community involvement, successful completion of Literacy Test, receipt of OSSD, final grades for private school courses)

Offers of Admission Three Possible Admission Times 1. End of January/Beginning of February 2. End of March/Beginning of April 3. Beginning/Mid May

Offers of Admission May 29 th Last date for offers June 1 st Earliest date by which Ontario Universities may require a response

Conditional Offers • Student must maintain a certain average as specified in the offer and/or certain grade in prerequisite courses • July transmission – if student has not met all the requirements (conditions, diploma) offer will be rescinded.

Out-of Province Applications Canadian • Applications online - deadlines are student’s responsibility • English language Quebec universities (Mc. Gill, Concordia, Bishop’s), Dalhousie, University of King’s College, U. B. C. , Victoria - apply after submitting applications to OUAC - OUAC reference number required • All other Canadian Universities/Colleges - student must inform Guidance department

Out-of Province Applications American • Over 4000 universities - research/deadlines are student’s responsibility • Ideally, begin research in Gr. 11 • All items, including school report, mid-term report, resume or information form, etc. are required 4 weeks prior to deadline • give guidance counsellors enough notice to put together application package
