Weird Verbs Pt 1 Get, have & have got I own = I have got I have a dog = I have got a dog I have a dog ~ I got (myself)a dog I got my dog (vaccinated) = ~~~~~~ Do I have a dog? = Have I got a dog? What you generally cannot HAVE GOT breakfast / dinner / a cup of coffee / a cigarette (unless you are having it behind your ear) etc. a bath (you can ‘have got’ a bath tub in your bathroom) / a shower / a swim / a rest / a party / a holiday / a nice time etc. an accident / an experience / a dream (unless having got a lifetime dream) etc. a look (at something) / a chat (with somebody) Compared to: have got a look (of a predator) a baby (= give birth to a baby) difficulty / trouble / fun
Some facts about Have Got 1. It's generally not appropriate to use "have got” in formal written English, whether in Britain or America I have got a degree in Maths from the University doesn't sound right for a written job application; I have a degree. . . sounds better. 2. In very informal American speech, people may drop 've before got. I('ve) got a problem.

Used to as the marker of the past actions (Did I use to…? ) I did it in the past but I do not do it anymore_____ I used to have a dog = I had a dog I used to jog every morning = ‘Usually’ I jogged every morning I used to jog every morning = I would jog every morning I used to have my coffee black = ‘Usually’ I drank my coffee black 2. Use to as a marker of the present actions (Do I use to. . ? ) ___Usually I do it now and have been doing it for awhile___ I use to read a paper every morning = I usually read a paper I use to take a cab to get home = I usually take a cab to get home
3. To be used to as in having a habit or a preference in the present. I am used to watching news on the Internet, I don’t watch TV. = Usually I watch my news on the internet and prefer it to TV. I am used to cook my breakfast myself and dine out in the evening. = Usually I cook my breakfast myself, but I prefer to dine out. I am used to walk my dog after the evening news. = Usually I walk with my dog after I have watched evening news.
