English Weddings! Before the Wedding Engagement Before the wedding there is the proposal: Man gets down on one knee and says ‘Will you marry me? ’ whilst presenting an engagement ring. During leap years, on the 29 th of February, it is traditional for women to propose to their respective partners. Once engaged, the man is known as fiancé, the woman is known as fiancée. Before the wedding: Parties For women – there is a Hen Party, Hen do, bachelorette party. To celebrate the last few days of being single before getting married. The ‘hen’ or ‘bachelorette’ does not organise the party herself, her friends and family do. To celebrate: lots of drinking, dancing and strippers!
Bachelor party/Stag do This is the party the man has with his friends and his male relatives. It is often very crazy! Sometimes they go abroad. Lots of drinking, dancing, strippers and pranks! Some activities they do include paintballing and a bar crawl. Seen as last days of freedom!
The People! Bride and groom Ring bearer/Page boy Ushers For the groom: Best man , Groomsmen For the bride: Maid of honour - If she is married, she is called the "matron of honour" instead. Bridesmaids Father of the Bride Flower girl
The Guests! Guests are given a wedding invitation and are expected to RSVP (reply, stating whether or not they will be attending the wedding).
The Wedding Ceremony The ushers and/or groomsmen escort the grandparents of the bride and groom to their seats. The ushers and/or groomsmen escort the mother of the groom and mother of the bride to their seats. The bridesmaids enter, escorted by the groomsmen. The maid or matron of honour enters, either by herself or escorted by the best man. The ring bearer or page boy enters. The flower girl enters. (In some ceremonies, the ring bearer will accompany the flower girl. ) The bride then proceeds down the aisle, escorted by her father, to the accompaniment of music (usually the wedding march, often called "Here comes the bride"), and the ceremony starts.
The Wedding Ceremony During the ceremony the bride and groom make their marriage vows. Marriage vows are promises a couple makes to each other during a wedding ceremony. In Western culture, these promises have traditionally included the notions of affection "love, comfort, keep", faithfulness "forsaking all others", "for richer or for poorer", "in sickness and in health", and "as long as we both shall live", "until death do us part“.
Wedding Reception During the reception a number of speeches and/or toasts are given in honour of the couple. The new couple have the first dance The bride and her father have a dance At the reception there is a meal The wedding cake is cut at the reception
Traditions The bride has to wear: something borrowed, something blue, something old, something new. Throw the bouquet Cut the cake together Carry the bride over the threshold Go on a honeymoon
