WEBINAR PRO’S • • • Low cost No travel expense No expense for instructor or a location Can reach a large geographical region Ability to provide comparable gain in knowledge, skills, and satisfaction
WEBINAR CON’S • • Technical difficulties (poor audio, video pausing, etc. ) Lack of face-to-face interaction
STUDY FINDINGS • • With use of webinar teaching the quality of spirometry use increased significantly. Documentation of the severity of asthma increased from 23% to 35%. This led to an increase in appropriate treatment for asthma.
STUDY FINDINGS • A study determined that after participating in webinar teaching caregiver self-efficacy significantly increased in areas focused on 1) helping caregivers better understand the operation of health care systems; 2) to promote caregiver empowerment for effective patient advocacy; 3) behavioral strategies to promote effective communication during doctor’s office visits and emergency room encounters.
STUDY FINDINGS • • In a study of COPD patients, a webinar discussing end-of-life issues caused fear and anxiety. Patients felt that more interpersonal dynamics should be used when involving issues such as end-of-life education.
DISCUSSION • • • An individuals learning style could determine effectiveness of a webinar Instructors need to be interactive Content needs to be up to date Information needs to be meaningful and energizing Proper equipment needs to be used for effective webinars
CONCLUSION • • Statistics show that individuals recall 20% of what they hear and 10% of what they read, however, individuals remember 70% of what they discuss and 90% of what they practice or apply. These statistics do not show a promising future for webinars. Multiple studies show that participating in mix methods of training has the most effective outcome in gaining skills, ability, and knowledge.
