2008 Accomplishments Washington State Emergency Management & Department of Natural Resources ($307, 700 Funding Received) § Worst Case Distant Event Modeling Completed for Washington State by PMEL § WA State Military Department executed an agreement with private land owners for evacuation of populated areas within the inundation zone that have minimal high ground. (Six years in the making!) § In partnership with WA DNR and local jurisdictions, WA EMD continued to provide training on the Disaster Response Guidebook for Hotels and Motels on the Washington Coast. o Six (6) hotels in Ocean Shores, WA and twenty (20) hotels in Long Beach, WA participated in the training during 2008 -2009. § The Broadcasters Tsunami Emergency Guidebook was updated and distributed throughout all of Seattle and to 100% of coastal broadcasters. (Developed in 2006 and Updated annually) § WA DNR completed development of the Tacoma Tsunami Inundation Map

2008 Accomplishments Washington State Emergency Management & Department of Natural Resources ($307, 700 Funding Received) § WA EMD, USGS, and Local Jurisdictions partnered to produce a tsunami public education video entitled “Tsunami Preparedness in Washington. ” § § Features a 7 -min. video and 6 chapters that provide indepth information on preparing an evacuation route, developing an evacuation kit, tsunami warning process, native oral history, etc. Jefferson County was recognized as a Tsunami. Ready Community. § Washington is the first state in the lower 48 to have all of its outer coastal counties recognized as Tsunami Ready. § Continuing to work with WA Department of Natural Resources to publish bi-monthly issues of Tsu. Info Alert § Continued Installation of All-Hazard Alert Broadcasting (AHAB) Sirens in coastal communities (8 installed in 2008 -2009).

Pilot Train-the-Trainer (T-3) Program The purpose of the T 3 Program is to train a cadre of professionals that are qualified to serve as Tsunami Public Education Instructors at the community level. Tsunamis • To achieve this, the T 3 Program provides participants with a basic understanding of fundamental principles and concepts in: – Tsunami Science – Tsunami Warning – Tsunami Risk Reduction – Conducting community-level Tsunami Public Education • WA EMD/PMEL/and USGS conducted a pilot T 3 course in which 20 instructors from 9 cities, counties and tribes participated. To date, T-3 graduates have conducted at least 12 community workshops for a minimum of 339 participants.

2009 Accomplishments Washington State Emergency Management Division & Department of Natural Resources ($958, 830 Funding Received) § PMEL has begun modeling of Seattle Fault Tsunami in Lake Washington. § The Draft Everett Tsunami Inundation Map has been completed by WA DNR for review by local jurisdictions and military installations. § WA EMD has contracted with the Univ. of Washington Hazard Mitigation Institute to complete a vertical evacuation siting study for Pacific County, WA. § An RFP has been completed by WA EMD to solicit bids for a performance evaluation of the All-Hazard Alert Broadcast (AHAB) system. § A revised T-3 course is in the final development stages by WA EMD contractors. This version of the curriculum incorporates “lessons learned” from the pilot in early 2009. § The WA Tsunami Program has coordinated with local emergency managers from the four (4) outer coastal counties and developed a routine, consistent testing regimen of AHAB sirens.

2009 Accomplishments Washington State Emergency Management Division & Department of Natural Resources ($958, 830 Funding Received) § Pacific County Emergency Mgt. , Shoalwater Bay Tribe, and WA EMD implemented a pilot program to distribute 63 NOAA Weather Radios to low-income families on the Tokeland Peninsula in September 2009. § NWS Seattle/Portland worked with WA EMD and the Cities of Ilwaco and South Bend and the Shoalwater Bay Tribe to become Tsunami. Ready. One application approved, two in process. § The NW Tribal Emergency Management Council and WA EMD have begun planning activities for deployment of disaster supply caches to coastal tribes in early 2010. § WA EMD finalized contract with David Johnston with GNS for social science research projects over the next four-year period.
