EIGHTEENTH ORDINARY SESSION OF THE AFRICAN UNION, ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA • During their last AU summit at the auspices of the New African Union Headquaters Complex in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia all the head’s of states from Africa decided to recognize the life and work of Wangari Muta Maathai, • The Summit also encouraged the AU Commission, to take all the necessary measures to mobilize resources in support of “Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI)” as an African Centre of Excellence, to encourage research on environmental governance and its linkages with peace, human rights and democracy in Africa.
Stabilizing Kenya by Solving Forest Related Conflicts (STAKE) • Ph. D and MSc research program focusing on the Mau Complex. The overall goal of STAKE is to contribute towards stability in Kenya with a specific study on the ongoing attempt to democratize the governance of the forest resources. • Four (4) Ph. Experiential Learning program: Interdisciplinary land use and natural resource management (SLUSE) • WMI is collaborated with The Danish Consortium for Environment and Development (DUCED) and the Green Belt Movement (GBM) to mount the Sustainable Land Use and Natural Resource Management (SLUSE) Field-Based Course. The course is founded on the acknowledged fact that land other natural resource management issues cannot be adequately handled by any one discipline
