The country lies within the north temperate zone and has a changeable, maritime climate. The capital of Wales is Cardiff. It is very big and busy industrial centre. It had a population in 2011 of 3, 064, 000, and has a total area of 20, 779 km 2 (8, 023 sq mi). Wales has over 1, 200 km (750 mi) of coastline, and is largely mountainous, with its highest peaks in the north and central areas, including Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales 1085 m high. It is situated in the Snowdonia National Park, an important tourist centre.

It is an important industrial city and a port. It is also an administrative and education centre. As a tourist, you can visit the castle and Llandaff Cathedral, the National Museum of Wales. If you like music, there is the famous National Concert Hall, St. David's Hall, or the New Theatre, which is the home of the Welsh National Opera House. Cardiff is also famous for Cardiff Castle is a major tourist attraction in the city and is situated in the heart of the city centre. The National History Museum at St Fagans in Cardiff is a large open air museum housing dozens of buildings from throughout Welsh history that have been moved to the site in Cardiff.

SNOWDONIA Wales is a generally mountainous country on the western side of central southern Great Britain. Much of Wales' diverse landscape is mountainous, particularly in the north and central regions. The mountains were shaped during the last ice age, the Devensian glaciation. The highest mountains in Wales are in Snowdonia, of which five are over 1, 000 m (3, 300 ft). The highest of these is Snowdon, at 1, 085 m (3, 560 ft). The Welsh mountains over 3, 000 feet (910 meters) high are known collectively as the Welsh 3000 s and are located in a small area in the north-west.
SPORTS AND GAMES Wales is represented at major world sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, Rugby League World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. At the Olympics Games, Welsh athletes compete alongside those of Scotland, England Northern Ireland as part of a Great Britain team.
NATIONAL SYMBOLS The daffodil and the leek are also symbols of Wales. The origins of the leek can be traced to the 16 th century, while the daffodil became popular in the 19 th century.
