Example: To my mind a shop is a place to waste money. Use the words: to relax, to spend time, to buy things, to have good time, to enjoy shopping, to look at new models, to buy presents, to make friends, to go to sales, to work, to get tired, to be happy, to have fun. Summarize everything. Begin as follows: For some people a shop is a place…. For other people a shop is a place…. For me a shop is a place….
Listen to the text and say: What departments do Marks & Spencer and Casey’s have? You see the photos of two department stores. In the first photo you see Marks & Spencer whereas in the second photo you see Casey’s. Marks & Spencer is in London, England, but Casey’s is in New York, the USA. They are both photos of the biggest department stores in the world. Both stores sell the best food and clothes. They are both open seven days a week.
Both Marks & Spencer and Casey’s have many departments: Greengrocer’s, Butcher’s, Bakery, Confectioner’s, Flower stalls, Boots & Shoes department, Clothes department, Jeweller’s, Newsagent’s and others. Both department stores organize season sales and give a discount for about 50% (fifty percent). But that’s where the similarity ends. On one hand Marks & Spencer has a history of about 120 (one hundred twenty) years. On the other hand Casey’s has a history of about 50 (fifty) years. Marks & Spencer works for workers and shoppers’ fun, but Casey’s works to sell everything for a penny.
Marks & Spencer has 1500 (one thousand five hundred) department stores while Casey’s has only 600 (six hundred) department stores. One most important difference is that Marks & Spencer sells only traditional food and clothes, but Casey’s always sells new trends to interest the people. As for me I would go shopping to Casey’s because I’d like to buy a new original dress for the Christmas party. I don’t like traditional clothes.
Divide into two teams, read the text, complete the table and then speak about similarities and differences of Marks & Spencer and Casey’s. Where would you like to go shopping? Similarities Marks &Spencer Casey’s Differences What kind of shops are they? Where is it? What do the shops sell? What history does it have? When are they open? What for does the shop work?
