NORMAN AND MEDIVAL TIMES In 1066 the Normans came to Chester. William the Conquerer defended the English Border from the Welsh. Chester became like a small kingdom. He set up a Benedictine Abbey in 1093. The town walls and a castle strengthened the town against attacks from the Welsh. During the civil war Chester supported King Charles 1. But the river began to dry up and Chester lost all it’s trade and money.
