HE Research SI Development (cont’d) l Backing Australia’s Ability – Building our Future through Science and Innovation $5. 3 billion over seven years from 2004 -05. l National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) programme l l 16 Priority areas for NCRIS (AUS$540 m) l Area relevant to VO infrastructure dev work is: l Platforms for Collaboration: $75. 0 million 7 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
NCRIS: Platforms for Collaboration l “All areas of modern research are heavily – and increasingly – dependent on technological platforms that enhance their ability to generate, collect, share, analyse, store and retrieve information. These “platforms for collaboration” are continuing to develop rapidly, creating an ongoing flow of opportunities to enhance the quantity, quality and productivity of research effort. ” l Dr Rhys Francis is facilitator Reference group includes Professor James Dalziel, MAMS Principal Investigator l 8 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
VO’s for e. Research in Australian HE It is anticipated that many of the NCRIS funded projects (AUS$540 m) will involve HE institutions engaging in inter-institutional collaborative e. Research. l VO’s will be established in order to facilitate this collaboration. l VO Infrastructure development work is very timely. l 9 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Current VO Mgnt Issues l Significant time spent on establishing and administering VO infrastructure - at expense of time on core business of research l Reliance on open-source tools (cost sensitivity, avoiding vendor lock-in, desire/requirement to access source code to understand modify tools) l OS Tool integration difficult - Disparate IAM mechanisms, poor or no external access to configuration data and/or application state data 10 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Solution: IAM Suite l l Development of a secure portal-based VO infrastructure enabling integration of collaboration tools (portlets, standalone applications) using Shibboleth/SAML as common IAM mechanism, integrating with Grid services via My. Proxy. Federation + VO specific attributes used to access VO ‘internal’ services (which may be distributed across member institutions) Release as Open. Source software, architected to enable user community to contribute tools Potential to influence design of new OS collaboration tools to facilitate integration 11 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Australian Access Federation Based on MAMS (establishing Shibboleth Federations) and e. Security project (establishing root CA for Australian HE) work, funding has been approved to establish the Australian Access Federation (AAF) l Possible infrastructure (MAMS proposal), including role for VO Portal: (next slide) l 13 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Conclusion l l l IAM Suite is a ‘real world’ VO Management toolkit, bringing together Grid/PKI and Shib/Web tools in a single, easy-to-use system. Strong interest in using IAM Suite in the Australian Access Federation – could be one of the key drivers to widespread AAF adoption. Strong interest in current federation projects related to collaborative e. Research - will deliver implementation experiences and drive refinements over the next 6 months 15 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Conclusion (cont’d) l l IAM Suite has the potential to contribute to the development process for NCRIS AAF funding and support extends the MAMS work to move to a real Trust Federation in Aust that uses both Shib and PKI MAMS has approx $3 M funding over 07 -08 to support work on the AAF and the IAM Suite. Please work with us on both practical implementations and feedback, as well as development of tools. 16 META ACCESS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
