The Evolution of the VIN Pre 1950 VIN’s offered no critical data only a serialization of the vehicle, including year, make and model.
The Evolution of the VIN 1950 -1979 saw an increase in the importance of VIN’s. The need for more critical data including year, make, model, as well as body style, engine, and assembly plant was now needed.
The Evolution of the VIN Starting in the 1980 model year, the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration overseen by the U. S. Department of Transportation) established a law that all vehicles sold in the United States were required to have a 17 character VIN containing certain critical information. This includes motor vehicles, trailers, motorcycles, and mopeds. No manufacturer is exempt from this rule.
The Importance of the VIN The modern 17 character VIN becomes like a finger print for that vehicle.
The Importance of the VIN If you were buying a used car, checking the VIN allows you to find information such as if the vehicle has ever been wrecked or reported stolen. The VIN allows you to check if there has been any recalls, if the odometer has been tampered with, or if the vehicle was involved in a “Lemon Law” case. Discuss with you partner why this would be important information to you.
The Importance of the VIN The modern 17 character VIN is also like the DNA code for your vehicle. Discuss with your partner why someone would make this comparison.
The Importance of the VIN The modern 17 character VIN is also like the DNA code for your vehicle. Human DNA shows the uniqueness of people, the VIN shows the uniqueness of that particular vehicle. No two humans can have the same DNA, no two vehicles can have the same VIN.
