VICTORY DAY
Every country and every nation has its own customs, traditions and festivals.
There are many holidays in Russia, when people all over the country do not work and have special celebrations.
But the greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day which is celebrated on the 9 th of May.
On that day in 1945 the Soviet Army and its allies [`ælαiz] (союзники) completely defeated the German fascists [fæ∫ists] and the Second World War and the Great Patriotic War ended.
Victory Day is the day when we recall the heroic deeds of our grand fathers during the Great Patriotic war.
We also pay particular homage [`homid 3] to our grand mothers who were nurses (санитарка) and rescued thousands of wounded [wundid] soldiers.
Russian soldiers rescued thousands of children of all nations who were placed by the fascists to the concentration camps.
This year we are celebrating the 72 d anniversary of this great event.
Traditionally there will be the military parade in the Red Square. Russian soldiers will take part in the Victory parade to demonstrate their skills.
On the 9 th of May our great veterans will take part in this parade as well. We’ll give them presents and flowers.
People will lay wreaths on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in all cities and towns of Russia.
Radio and television will broadcast popular war songs and concerts all day long.
There will be patriotic films on TV to commemorate the great victory over the fascists. “Dawns Here Are Quiet”
“Seventeen Moments of Spring”
