D school, into the dedicated basket, next to E 205) Every registration of a new Ph. D student requires an appointment (tel 7624) with the Ph. D school (E 203)
To register • Fully completed registration forms with all required documents • Signed thesis charter (for new Ph. D students) • Signed Information System charter (for new Ph. D students) • Signed course plan (fiche pédagogique) (for all) For new Ph. D students, an appointment with the Ph. D School is mandatory : uncomplete forms will be rejected and a new appointment will be required. For other Ph. D students, The Ph. D school is open… EVERY AFTERNOON, but you can also drop your FULLY COMPLETED registration file into the basket (E 205)
Collection of documents • Proof of registration (Certificat de scolarité): on specific summoning from the Ph. D school (sur convocation spécifique de l’ED), from September 30, E 205 • Student Card: for new Ph. D students only, about one week after your registration, on specific summoning from the Ph. Training ST-type courses : Science and Technology 8 ECTS credits (2 x 20 h) are required prior to your Ph. D defence ü Lectures proposed by the specialties – 4 ECTS credits / lecture. ü Lectures proposed by other institutions, summer schools… can be validated as ST credits by the responsible of your speciality A prior agreement from the responsible of your specialty is required !!! Without this prior agreement, no credits will be awarded
Training SHIP-type lectures: Human Sciences and Professional Skills 12 SHIP credits (60 h) are required prior to the Ph. D defence ü The lecture « MRIS : Méthodologies de Recherche (et de transmission) d’Informations Scientifiques et techniques» is mandatory (2 SHIP credits): 11, 12, 13 December (to be confirmed)

The certificate EFC: « engineering for companies » A specific program to develop skills to work in companies • Proposed by the association of directors of the French engineering schools (CDEFI) • Strengthening relations between doctors and companies • Assessing your « know how » to work in private companies • Requirements • Specific registration to the Ph. D school • A research work « in connection with » industrial companies • 16 SHIP credits (instead of 12) required in company-oriented (ED 06 : « Doctoriales » is mandatory) or in English Ph. Incoming Ph. D students : WELCOME !
A picture is required to get your Student Card • Your registration done, you must go to the office P 011 to have your picture taken. This picture will be reproduced on your student card • This office will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 4 pm to 5: 30 pm • You must know your UTT student number (indicated during registration) When proceeding to your registration, tell the Ph. D. school if you intend to go to the university restaurant. According to this, your may have a student card usable as an electronic purse (Moneo system) to pay for your meals at this restaurant. This will last 3 years.

Initial choices are important … Initial choices will affect future • No teaching activities => no job in universities • No publications => neither a job in a university nor in a research organization • No knowledge of companies’ world => no job in any company (see EFC label)
The thesis A personal contribution to research into a team • The thesis is your thesis • The thesis is a training to research and innovation • The function of your supervisor(s) is to help you to reach the goal that has been defined jointly • The thesis is a project and must be managed as any project • The thesis ensures personal skills development (technological and scientific skills… but not only…)
The main stages of a thesis Three years within a research team • First stage: you perform background analysis • State of the art • Your own function in the project • You will have to make a presentation of the progress of this first stage in front of a specific jury (see page 12 in the « guide du jeune chercheur » ) • Second stage: you make the project progress • Third stage: you make a good use of your results • Publications • Technology transfer (Patents, Licenses, Innovative company creation …) • Writing, oral defence and diffusion of your thesis
Language training The result of your research is not only the « know how » , it is important to be able to communicate with others… in English (and in French) Improving your English is of your initiative, • Level evaluation (in February), then you can attend English lessons with other UTT students Contact : Ph. D school • If you want to improve your communication skills in scientific English : ED 04 (4 credits)… after level evaluation
Improving your French (Dominique MASSON) The thesis can be written in English… (international co-supervision, non Frenchspeaking members of the jury…) but a extended abstract (20 -30 pages) has to be written in French • You can (must) improve your French by attending « French as a foreign language (FLE) » lessons with UTT engineering and master students • Some available possibilities (after level evaluation: September 26, October 3): o Short intensive lessons o Long lasting French training Contact: Ph.
