UPDATES OF BNL R&D § See Minfang’s talk yesterday. § We have made a lot of progress re Gd-LS, and pure LS, since the R&D proposal last September. “Quality Control” (visual inspection, optical transparency and light output) vs. time since chemical preparation. Also studying compatibility with acrylic, radioactive contaminants, … § Following Peter’s lead, we will provide a written update and some slides to Mike/Ed Richard for possible use at (Dick) Hahn, 5/14/05 Nu. SAG.

Issues of LS Scale-Up (Gd and Pure), #1 1) Currently doing R&D at BNL on scale of few L. 2) Preparing ~1% Gd-LS, then diluting with organic solvent to 0. 1% (factor X 10 in volume). 3) Intend to increase to ~100 L for prototype studies. Need modest funding (~$30 k) for equipment and materials as described in last year’s R&D proposal. 4) Also will need funding for people to continue the R&D work; is not in the

Issues of LS Scale-Up (Gd and Pure), #2 1) For detector production, want 65 T of Gd-LS per module. For r ~ 1 kg/L, 65 k. L @~0. 1%. 2) Scope out the scale: Want 6 k. L @~1%. Assume do in 20 batches of 300 L @~1%. Need to decide scale. 3) Will need equipment on this scale for the chemical synthesis (cite SNO distillation rig with 200 L, is a simpler system than what we need. Its cost ~$100 k). 4) Also need equipment for factor X 10 dilution, storage.

Issues of LS Scale-Up (Gd and Pure), #3 1) Is a small chemical factory. Automated? Incorporates distillation, solvent extraction, mixers, ion exchange, centrifugation, closed system. DO WHERE? 2) Build at BNL? (or at Braidwood site? ) Space? People to do production? Involve chem. engineers? (My ignorance of) the Proposal Process & Nu. SAG 1) Collaboration submitted R&D proposal. Yet it contains costs of civil construction, detector, … (Cf. Ray’s remarks yesterday). But BNL is not ready to give details and costs of production of the Gd-LS and the LS. Is this a problem? Need info when? 2) Nu. SAG will review our R&D proposal by fall 2005.
