ntroduction and history As the oldest university in the English-speaking world, Oxford is a unique and historic institution. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. I

Famous Oxonians Gifted men and women have studied or taught at the University throughout its history. Among them are 26 British Prime Ministers, at least 30 international leaders, 50 Nobel Prize winners, and 120 Olympic medal winners.

Strategic plan The University of Oxford aims to lead the world in research and education. We seek to do this in ways which benefit society on a national and a global scale. There around 40, 000 students at Oxford's two universities (Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University). They make up a big part of the city’s 150, 000 population.

Libraries Oxford University has more than 100 libraries and has many collections of international importance – databanks for research, teaching and study – full of wonderful treasures that anyone can enjoy.
