UNIDO-ICHET UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR HYDROGEN ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES Hydrogen Energy Projects for Clean and Sustainable Future Presented by : Dr. Mustafa Hatipoglu, Managing Director
Mission & Background of UNIDO-ICHET The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies ( ICHET ) is a UNIDO project which has the mission of demonstrating viable implementations of Hydrogen energy technologies and facilitating their widespread use in developing countries through realizing & supporting demonstration projects, applied research activities, education, training, seminars, conferences and workshops As a non-profit organization, ICHET aims to support developing countries ‘leap-frog’ over conventional energy technologies to hydrogen technology
Why Hydrogen and Fuel Cells ? not a primary energy source, but an energy H 2 is carrier like electricity Energy security concern of each country Concern over global climate change & warming ( < 2 C) H 2 is transportable & environmentally friendly Energy storing capacity of H 2 is much more than Li-Ion battery ( 33, 306 Wh/kg vs 180 Wh/kg ) Fuel cells are electrochemical devices which produce electricity & heat by combining H 2 & O 2, with only pure water & air as by-products Fuel Cells are very efficient energy converters ( up to 60% ) Fuel Cells modular technology.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstrations Residential heating & electricity ( CHP ) Back-up power ( UPS ) Portable power Distributed power generation Cars Buses Scooters Bicycles Golf-carts Forklifts Utility vehicles Space vehicles Airplanes Locomotives Boats Underwater vehicles Portable devices ( laptop, etc. )
) Battery Electric Vehicles ( of Comparison BEV High battery weights & sizes w. r. t. their storage capacity constrain their driving range to max. 160 miles FFuel Cell Vehicles ( CEV with BEV FCV ) Longer driving range 450 km with 350 bar H 2 and 800 km with 700 bar H 2 has shorter refueling time ( 3 min. ) Long recharging times ( 7 -8 hours ) H 2 has much more energy storing capacity than batteries BEV : for short driving Batteries have 90% efficiency ranges and light loads EREV : for medium driving ranges and medium loads FCEV : for long & continuous driving ranges and heavier loads Hydrogen FC technology and battery technology are complementary to each other
Fuel Cell Vehicles Today : The Remaining Issues Source : GM
Greener Home Energy: TOSHIBA/PEFC Cogeneration Centralized ( Micro CHP ) System for Residental Power Production Efficiency : 35% Application xxxx xxxx Distributed Power Production: Efficiency : 86% Distributed Micro CHP Systems reduce CO 2 emission by 30 percent
