Antares detector configuration 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. T 08 workshop 3
Choice • Evaluation of 2 connectors in 2000 -2001: – Hydrastar from Seacon – MKII from ODI • Tests: – Pressure – Vibration – Temperature – Thermal chock – Connection/disconnections under pressure Result: Failure of the 2 Hydrastar connectors during the pressure test, so choice of ODI 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. Link configuration 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. T 08 workshop 5
Characteristics • • Connector: – 2 electrical wires : Voltage : 500 VAC, Current : ~2. 5 A, wire section : 3 mm 2 – 2 single mode optical fibres for slow control and data transmission (8 x Gbit/s Ethernet DWDM) – 2 single mode optical fibres for clock distribution (1 fibre for redundancy) Optical losses < 2 d. B per optical channel Length of the link : 120 m to 350 m Weight of the link : < 50 kg in water Dry cable for link, equipressure for jumper 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. T 08 workshop 6
Installation • • The cable is rolled on a drum and launched from sea surface The ROV takes the drum and install it in front of the JB The ROV connects on the JB side Measurements from shore (Optical and electrical) If connection ok, the ROV unrolles the cable up to the line Connection of the line side Check of the connection from shore 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. Connection experience • 16 lines connected in Antares (including prototypes) • No major connection problem on the line side • Some problems on JB side, 5 out of 16 connectors with problems: – 1 destroy during connection (mechanism), connector failure on cable – 2 with a breaker open (short due to water leak? ) – 1 with optical attenuation – 1 with connector damaged but could be repaired The number of failed outputs imposed us to buy special cables, “Y” cables, to connect 2 lines on the same JB output connector with also some optical modifications in the lines. 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. Conclusion • • • Problems only on JB side: no connector guide? , time in sea? Diameter mismatch? . . . Sediment accumulates in the rear part of the socket, even with the plastic plug Long term protection for connector in the sea before use Training necessary for connector users Reliability of electro-optical connectors? Could divide by 2 the number of connectors for risk and price reduction. 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. T 08 workshop 14
Special “Y” link • Need to build a link to connect to lines on 1 JB output due to JB outputs failure • 2 units under manufacture at ODI (planned end of April, ~4 months delay) 24/08/2008, Toulon , VLVn. T 08 workshop 15
