Who is counted? U. S. citizens and permanent residents enrolled for a degree at an accredited U. S. higher education institution who received academic credit towards their degree for study abroad during the 2005/06 academic year (including summer 2006).
U. S. Participation in Study Abroad is Increasing 223, 534 U. S. students received academic credit for study abroad in 2005/06, an 8. 5% increase over the previous year.
Students Are Primarily Undergraduates
Duration of U. S. Study Abroad Short-term programs have seen the largest growth in the past decade. Mid-length programs also continue to rise. The number of students in long-term programs has remained constant over the past decade. Short-term: Summer, January term, 8 weeks or less Mid-length: One, Two Quarters, One Semester Long-term: Academic Year, Calendar Year
Fields of Study Ø 53% of U. S. study abroad students major in the social sciences, humanities, and business & management.
Destinations of U. S. Study Abroad Students Europe remains the leading host region for U. S. students studying abroad, with 58% of the total.
Study in Non-traditional Destinations is Growing Study abroad to all regions except North America increased in 2005/06.

Europe and Oceania are the only regions for which the number of U. S. students studying abroad exceeds the number of international students in the U. S.

House of Representatives Passes Bill to Create National Study Abroad Program June 6, 2007 - WASHINGTON - In a historic move to support the international education of America’s college students, the U. S. House of Representatives today passed H. R. 1469, the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act. Institute of International Education
Study Abroad News & Issues Ø Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act • Ambitious mandate: to ensure that at least 1 million American college students will study abroad annually in 10 years time. • Make participation in study abroad available to the widest possible spectrum of students • Expand study abroad opportunities in less common destinations, especially in the developing world. • Vision of the late Senator Paul Simon, who worked to raise awareness of the need to ensure that the next generation of Americans is prepared with global knowledge and skills. • Bipartisan federal commission (Lincoln) subsequently recommended a national effort to dramatically increase study abroad by Americans. • The Senate version of the bill, S. 991, was introduced by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill. ) and Norm Coleman (R-Minn. ) and has garnered over 40 cosponsors. • Needs to go through appropriations and authorization Institute of International Education

Government is doing: National Security Language Initiative (NSLI) • Goal: to strengthen national security and prosperity in the 21 st century through strategic language learning. • A joint initiative of the Secretaries of Education, State, and Defense, and the Director of National Intelligence • Dramatically increase the number of Americans learning critical need foreign languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Farsi • Implemented through specific grants through the Fulbright, Gilman, NSEP and other programs Institute of International Education
