The Gateway Urban Mission Program provides a portal for community connections focusing on urban The Gateway Urban Mission Program provides a portal for community connections focusing on urban mission through: Academic Service Learning, Inclusion and Diversity, and Focused Applied Research • Through applied research, the Gateway Program focuses on the concept of “research to practice” on urban mission work to better respond to the needs and priorities of urban areas and ultimately improve the university’s impact, visibility, support, and partnerships within the community. Resources on Inclusion and Diversity • The Gateway program strives to provide effective resources and leadership on the goals of inclusion and diversity, within both UMKC and the greater Kansas City community. Service Learning • The Gateway Program staff are working cooperatively to create a central service-learning program within UMKC and to create greater partnerships with local colleges, universities, and community agencies to address service learning needs within the Kansas City metropolitan area. Women’s Leadership • This program fits perfectly with the Gateway’s mission of community inclusion and diversity by focusing efforts on encouraging greater civic involvement. 10
