INDEPENDENCE v Ukraine became an independent country on August 24 th, 1991. Parts of Ukraine belonged to different empires for centuries: the Ottoman empire, Poland-Lithuania, Austrian. Hungarian and Russian empire.
LANGUAGE v 53 % of Ukrainian population speak Ukrainian language took the second place on melodic criteria after Italian and it was ranked as the third most beautiful language in the world on such criteria as phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology and sentence structure after French and Persian at a linguistic contest held in Paris in 1934.
MOUNTAINS AND SEAS v. There are two sets of mountains settled in Ukraine – Carpathian and Crimean. v. There also two seas – the Black Sea and the Azov Sea (the shallowest sea in the world).

CHERNOBYL… v The Chernobyl Disaster happened 25 on the 26 th of April 1986 in the Ukraine (which was then part of the Soviet Union / USSR). It was the most serious accident in the history of the nuclear industry. The number of persons that died due to the radioactivity is wildly debated; it goes from 5, 000 to 500, 000 persons. It's been said that half of the persons that worked at the cleanup of Chernobyl are dead today, due to contact with radioactivity.

JUST A COUPLE INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT UKRAINE v The world's first constitution was created by a Ukrainian politician Pylyp Orlyk. On April 5 th, 1710 he was elected the Hetman of Zaporizhia troops. On the same day Pylyp Orlyk has announced "the Constitution of the rights and freedoms of Zaporizhia army. " For example, U. S. Constitution was adopted in 1787 and French and Polish in 1791.
FUN STAFF TO KNOW v Arsenalnaya Metro Station located in Kiev is the deepest in the world (105 meters). The station was built in 1960, very close to the House of Parliament. According to some reports, the tunnels near Arsenalnaya house secret shelters built specially for the political elite. v One of the most famous Christmas songs “Schedrik” (a folk song written by a Ukrainian composer, Mykola Leontovich) is known to the rest of the world as “Carol of the Bells” or “Ring Christmas Bells”.
EDUCATION v Nearly all (99. 4 percent) of Ukrainians over 16 years old know how to write and 70 percent of the population has a higher education.
