UCJC RESOURCES
ESSENTIAL AND NON-ESSENTIAL RESOURCES SO FAR, WE HAVE SEEN THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE ESSENTIAL RESOURCE IN A CLASSROOM: A RESOURCEFUL TEACHER
YOU’RE LATE!!!
DO MODERN TEXTBOOKS FOSTER ‘DIVERGENT THINKING’? ? ? http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=Z 78 aae. J R 8 no
YOU ARE LATE!!!
EDUCATION PARADIGM WATCH THE FOLLOWING CLIP AND DISCUSS WHETHER THE EXTENT TO WHICH OUR CURRENT RESOURCES CONTRIBUTE TO CREATE DIVERGENT THINKING STUDENTS CHANGING PARADIGM (4: 10 -9: 22)
TODAY, WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AND SOME NON-ESSENTIAL RESOURCES OF ALL THE NON-ESSENTIAL RESOURCES THERE’S A ESPECIALLY RELEVANT ONE, THE COURSEBOOK DISCUSSION: WHAT MAKES A GOOD COURSEBOOK? ? WOULD ANYBODY PREFER TO NOT USE A COURSEBOOK?
DISCUSS!!!
A GOOD COURSEBOOK SHOULD: Be available & affordable. Have an attractive layout and design. Prioritize oral & communicative activities. Include relevant language type. Feature adequate sequencing. Talk about topics that students find interesting.
HOW TO ASSESS A COURSEBOOK? ? As for Nunan (1988), the following criteria should be met: ü Fosters independent learning ü Focuses our pupils on their learning process ü Is readily available ü Accords with our pupils’ needs ü Can be used at more than one level ü Pedagogiacl objectives are clear
HOW MUCH SHOULD WE RELY ON THE COURSEBOOK? ? DISCUSS A valid coursebook will save us precious time which, otherwise, we would have devoted to planning our : ü Curriculum design ü Didactic units ü Activities It is a huge amount of time, not only devoted to planning at the beginning of the year, but also on our everyday planning of our sessions.
Yes, coursebooks are the bee’s kness, but…what are the downsides? ? ? ü If we resort to the coursebook too often, our sessions will become monotonous. ü If we merely use a coursebook, we will transfer the coursebook imperfections to our sessions. ü Coursebooks do not often include ‘authentic English’, but artificial, neutral English. ü Coursebooks do not always include regional varieties of the English Language.
Fair enough, M. Carmen, but then…should I or should I not follow a coursebook? ? I think coursebooks are very important, we don’t always have the time to plan our sessions. However, we should figure out what the weaknesses of our coursebook are and try to make up for them. …and how can I know what the weaknesses of my coursebooks are? ?
DISCUSS!!!!!
SOME COMMON WEAKNESSES ü NOT ENOUGH ORAL INPUT. ü ORAL INPUT IS USUALLY STANDARD ENGLISH, A. K. A. ‘RP’. DIALECTAL VARIETIES DO NOT SEEM TO EXIST!!!! ü INSUFFICIENT CULTURAL BACKGROUND. ü POOR DEVELOPMENT OF ‘BASIC COMPETENCES’.
AUTHENTIC VS NON-AUTHENTIC LANGUAGE USED IN REAL LIFE ENCOURAGES A STEP-BYSTEP ACQUISITION OF THE LANGUAGE NON-AUTHENTIC IS ARTIFICIAL LANGUAGE AT FIRST, STUDENTS DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY READ / LISTEN. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THEY MIGHT GET DISCOURAGED BEST WAY TO CREATE ‘COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENT STUDENTS’. NOT ‘REAL’ ENGLISH.
HOMEWORK!!!! CHOOSE A COURSEBOOK OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE (YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY IT!!!). WRITE A SHORT ESSAY ABOUT THE THINGS YOU LIKE / DON’T LIKE ABOUT THE BOOK. DO NOT FORGET TO MENTION THE TITLE , PUBLISHING HOUSE, PRICE, AVAILABILITY, ETC…
