UCF NSSLHA Member Meeting September 7, 2016
Why join NSSLHA? NSSLHA stands for the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association. This is a national organization dedicated to your major- SLP or Au. D. Our goal is to provide opportunities to network with your peers and professors, earn volunteer hours, and provide information about your future career!
What is National NSSLHA? ■ You can join National NSSLHA by registering and paying national dues of $60 via http: //www. asha. org/members/nsslha/ ■ You receive monthly newsletters and gain access to articles and journals posted on ASHA. org ■ Access to job listings (helpful post graduation). ■ Entitlements to discounted convention registration. ■ Offers national leadership positions throughout the country! ■ By being a national member will receive a discount on your first year’s dues to ASHA when you become a certified clinician.
How to Get Involved 1. Join us on Knightconnect, Facebook and Instagram to get the inside scoop on the weekly happenings of NSSLHA! 2. Turn in your membership application and dues to the treasurer! 3. Point earning events will be posted on Knight. Connect, which will require you to RSVP. Always be checking because these events are in demand! Attending events helps you earn points but also provides volunteer experience. These events can serve as an avenue to learn what your interests are within the field. 4. Join a committee! Committees are an opportunity to develop professional skills and build your resume.

Learn| UCF Graduate Fair ■ When: September 21, 2016 (Wednesday), from 4: 30 p. m. – 7: 30 p. m. ■ Where: UCF Student Union, Pegasus Ballroom ■ Preregister at: http: //www. graduate. ucf. edu/gradfair ■ Points awarded: 1 point (be sure to sign in at the Communication Sciences & Disorders display) This fair is structured as an open house-style event and for students interested in pursuing graduate or doctoral studies at University of Central Florida.
Learn| Strand Conference ■ When: Friday, September 30, 2016; 8 a. m. - 5 p. m. ■ Where: FAIRWINDS Alumni Center, 12676 Gemini Blvd. , Orlando, FL 32816 ■ Event description: This two day presentation will be on Diagnosis and Management of Childhood Apraxia of Speech, given by ASHA Fellow, Dr. Edythe Strand. Serve | Knights Give Back ■ When: October 22 th , 2016 (Saturday) ■ Where: Orlando Day Nursery (site subject to change, consult Knight Connect prior to the event) ■ Points awarded: 2 points for attendance ■ Event description: Volunteers will be cleaning toys, cots, chairs and the kitchen area, working in the organic garden, beautifying the outside area through planting, cleaning the playground and possibly spreading mulch. ■ Member limit: 10 persons needed *Please RSVP on Knight. Responsibilities may include (but are not limited to) logging in undergraduate students/client caregivers for observation, filing, resource check-in/check-out, and light clerical work.

Serve | Reel in for Autism • When: October 29, 2016 • Where: 201 E Dixie Ave Leesburg, FL • Points awarded: 2 points for attendance • Event description: Reel in for Autism is a benefit for the PALS program coordinated through UCF CARD Services.
Connect | Story Corps Project ■ When: Opportunity for participation is ongoing throughout the semester. ■ Where: Online—download the Story. Corps app, available for Apple & Android users. ■ Points awarded: 1 point ■ How to participate: – After downloading the Story. Corps app, record an interview between yourself and someone who inspired you to choose this field. – Have your interviewer electronically or manually complete the participant consent form. Email the given form and submission details of the interview to nsslhavpinucf@gmail. com. – Full details and more information will be posted on Knight. Connect. ■ Points awarded: 1 point per tailgate event, 1 point per dish to share ■ Event description: This event is a social opportunity for those in NSSLHA to get to know members of ASL Knights.

Points ■ 1 Point for each meeting attended ■ 2 Points for fundraisers, walks, or other events – 1 Additional point for being point person ■ 3 Points for holding a committee position ■ 3 Points for joining National NSSLHA or FLSHA ■ ½ Point for each item donated to CECO – 2 points max
Point Deduction Any member who fails to attend an event/ fundraiser and has not given the appropriate officer at least 24 hours notice will have points deducted. The amount deducted will equal how much the event was worth (e. g. , 2 -point deduction for a walk worth 2 points).

Getting Credit for Event ■ YOU MUST SIGN IN ON THE SIGN-IN SHEET ■ Use the designated sign-in sheet provided to the point person ■ Point person is responsible for printing and providing the sign-in on the day of the event

Membership Dues 2 semesters: $30 1 semester $20 ■ NSSLHA accepts cash and personal checks which can be made out to "UCF NSSLHA" or "NSSLHA at UCF" ■ Please be sure to turn in the application and dues at the same time!
Committee |Fundraising ■ One semester commitment ■ Two-three people ■ Points: 3 ■ Committee members will each be in charge of creating one fundraising event during the semester and will help each other in the organization of each event ■ In order to receive three points, the minimum of two events should be planned on your behalf ■ *Applications are on Knight Connect
Audiology ■ What do audiologists do? – ■ What is the entry level degree for an audiologist? – ■ The majority of audiologists are employed in medical settings. What is the job outlook for audiologists? – ■ As of 2006, the entry level degree for an audiologist is an Au. D. (Doctor of Audiology). Where do audiologists work? – ■ They evaluate, diagnose, treat and manage hearing loss and balance disorders in children and adults. Employment for audiologists is expected to grow 29% from 2014 -2024. I would love to discuss this exciting profession with you and help guide you on how to become involved in this field. A little bit about Kalyna Sperkacz… ■ I am currently a fourth semester graduate student. ■ I did my bachelor’s in CSD at UCF. ■ I went through two cycles of graduate applications. ■ I took a year off from school between undergrad and grad, and worked as a teaching assistant at a school in a suburb of Chicago.
A little bit about my position. . . ■ It encompasses: -Preparing for graduate school. -Preparing for your clinical fellowship year(CFY). -How to earn your certificate of clinical competence (CCC) from ASHA. -How to become a licensed professional in your state. -Job opportunities for bachelor’s and master’s students. -Applying for doctorate programs. ■ I help faciliate close working relationships between undergraduate and graduate students, and between students and professionals in our field.
