CHART EXPLANATIONS: DOUGHNUT CHART Pie/Doughnut Charts are best to use when you are trying to compare parts of a whole. They do not show changes over time. They are ideal for showing results of surveys although are slightly less readable than a stacked bar chart. LINE CHART Basic line graphs are the most fundamental chart. They are great at showing change over time. CLUSTERED COLUMN Clustered Bar Charts are best used to show relationships among individual data sets as well as each sets relationship to the broader whole. Copyright © 2013 The Nielsen Company. Depending on the actual data being visualized, these charts can be difficult to read as the baseline of comparison varies with each column. STACKED BAR CHART Stacked Bar Charts are useful when showing relative relationship of components. Results of survey information are easily converted to this format. This type of graph can represent units or percentages CLUSTERED BAR Clustered Bar Charts are best used to show relationships among individual data sets as well as each sets relationship to the broader whole. 9

CHART GRID LINES Use chart grid lines for line charts and charts without data labels CHART DATA CALL OUTS Use text boxes and call out lines instead of chart generated data labels when the data labels are too close together (see the stacked column chart and stacked bar example slides in this file) CHART DATA MARKERS Use the round shape, size 8, for all Data Markers CHART TREND-LINES Make Trend-lines Black, 2 pt width, and Dotted (first choice in the “Dash type” pull-down menu) 10
BEST PRACTICES FOR EXCEL CHARTS Select the chart in Excel, then copy and paste the chart into a Power. Point Layout Chart Placeholder. To save time formatting, use one of the chart templates that closely matches your chart: Right-click on your chart, then select “Change Chart Type” from the contextual menu. The “Change Chart Type” Dialogue box will open. Choose the “Templates Folder” at the top left side of the dialogue box. A library of templates will appear in the right side of the dialogue box.
