TV in modern life

Television most definitely plays a very important part in people's lives. We like to watch television programmes dealing with animals and birds and all kinds of living things in their natural surroundings, as well as to watch sporting events in actual progress.

• Above all, we love seeing dramatic entertainments of all kinds; the plays of many leading dramatists; dramatised versions of the works of famous novelists; lovely one-act plays, comic turns, and amusing episodes of all sorts.

• We can hear symphony concerts, operas and oratorios and popular melodies all transmitted with lifelike clarity. We have an opportunity of hearing well-informed talks on archeology, history, geography, science and technology. We hear critics talking about new books, films, plays, works of art. We hear living poets reading their own poems.

Soap opera: a programme often on two or three times a week, which follows the lives of a group/community of people. The stories are often exciting, dramatic and hard to believe. For examples: Days of our Lives, Santa Barbara, Passions, Another Life

Quiz show or Game show: individuals, teams or families who answer questions or play different games against each other. The winner gets a prize, e. g. a car, a holiday, money.

Chat show: a television programming or radio programming genre in which one person (or group of people) discusses various topics put forth by a talk show host. Usually, guests consist of a group of people who are learned or who have great experience in relation to whatever issue is being discussed on the show for that episode.

Chat show Television talk shows often feature celebrity guests who talk about their work and personal lives as well as their latest films, TV shows, music recordings or other projects they'd like to promote to the public. The hosts are often comedians who open the shows with comedy monologues.

Documentary films constitute a broad category of nonfictional motion pictures intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. A series: a number of programmes about the same situation or the same characters in different situations. This may be a comedy series or a drama series. Serials typically follow main story arcs that span entire television seasons or even the full run of the series, which distinguishes them from traditional episodic television that relies on more stand-alone episodes. Worldwide, the soap opera is the most prominent form of serial dramatic programming.

Current affairs programme: a programme about today's social/political problem. This differs from regular news broadcasts that emphasizes on news reports presented for simple presentation as soon as possible, often with a minimum of analysis. It is also different from the news magazine show format in that the events are discussed immediately.

Good and bad sides of TV Good sides: -First of all it keeps people informed, we can learn a lot of information watching TV. We can choose programs that appeal to us more, because TV provides programs for all interests. Sometimes we can relax, entertain ourselves when we are tired. Advertisement on TV gives us information about different products and it makes easier to choose things to buy. When we watch TV we learn about the world, famous people and global or recent news.

Bad sides of TV: TV has a lot of disadvantages. It takes a lot of time and it makes us lazy. And it’s very harmful for our health, especially eyes. Some violent programs and films make people violent. Violence becomes a vital problem. There is too much advertisement on TV. Sometimes it can encourage us to buy things we don’t need at all. Watching TV takes most of free time of almost all people. We just watch it, we do not concentrate, and, finally, we waste time.

It's the main source of information and a cheap form of entertainment for millions of people. It's the window on the world which gives us an opportunity to "travel" all over the world, to "meet" different people and learn about their customs and traditions. It has the power to educate and broaden our minds.
