Oxford is one of oldest and most famous cities in the world. Oxford – the city in Great Britain, the capital of the County of Oxfordshire.

It is famous for it’s university, the Oxford University. It also called a city of students, because over 12000 students live and study here in thirtyfive colleges.

Oxford is a place of young people and old traditions; teachers, for example, are called “dons” and still wear black gowns. Students here are taught one-to-one in the Socratic tradition.

Students here are surrounded by old stone buildings. One of them is University of Hartford, one of the smallest colleges in the university. About two hundred students live and work here.

Henry II played a major role in formation of the scientific city.

Oxford is not all work, there are lots of clubs and other interesting places for students and dons to visit. For example the Sheldonian Theater, which is used for concerts and university’s ceremonies.

There is a bookshop opposite theater, where people can buy books. .

It is one of the world’s biggest bookshops, with seven kilometers of shelves.

There are two rivers in Oxford are Thames and Chervell.

On the river bank Chervell is located the most magnificent college in Oxford – the Magdalencollege founded in 1458 by one of teachers of the Winchester college.

Writers Oscar Uald (1856– 1900) and Joseph Addison(1672– 1719) were students of Magdalencollege– the picturesque small street about the river Chervell is called his name. The college have extensive Ualjdpark and the Botanical garden based in 1621. There is studied herbs, and also the plants which had scientific value. The rosary is devoted to researchers and openers of penicillin.

People usually travel along the rivers by boats called “punts”.
