TRANSLATION OF NAMES Jun Blore
TWO WAYS TO TRANSLATE NAMES A name can be translated from the source text to the target text without change. This often causes difficulty as languages don’t always have the same sounds. A name can be adapted from the source to the target language with consideration to pronunciation and spelling. Known as transliteration or transcription Standard way of dealing with names in texts
Certain sounds in English and Russian and Ukrainian have no equivalent sounds in the target language so they must be substituted. (th) (w) Washington, snow, winter, Wales (х) bath, Caruthers, the, Athens Херсон (й), (ё), (ы), (е)
HOW WOULD YOU TRANSLATE THIS? Jun David Blore (my father’s name is Melvyn)
NAMES OF PEOPLE They are mostly transliterated For some names you must transliterate them Some names have many ways to translate or transcribe them Mc. Donalds, Thornberry, Jackson. Adam, Rachel, Michael, Alexander Nicknames are usually not transliterated Царь Иван Грозный = Tsar Ivan the Terrible
GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES They are mostly transliterated However the names of seas, oceans, bays, archipelagoes, straits, channels, administrative territories, and islands are always translated: Pacific Ocean- Тихий океан Sea of Azov- Азовсьске море Geographical names created using common nouns are always literally translated: The Rocky Mountains- Скалистые горы
NAMES OF COMPANIES AND CORPORATIONS They are mostly transliterated Marconi Instruments Limited. - Маркони Инструментс Лимитед Usually a longer description will help you decide how to transliterate it. Some companies may decide to keep the company name unchanged so that you use it like its native language even in a different language.
TRANSLATION OF PUBLISHING HOUSES They are mostly transliterated An important fact to remember is that when translating publishing houses into Russian and Ukrainian you will need the country or city of origin. Unfortunately most American and British publishers will not have their city or country of origin in their names You must find it inside the book Associated Book Publishers, Penguin Books, Chapman & Hall- all from London
BE CAREFUL OF CITIES AND COUNTRIES! Translating the names of cities and countries is often already set. They don’t always have the same name in other languages. Germany=Deutschland= Германия Venice=Венеция Croatia=Хорватия Hungary=Венгрия I’m sure you can find more examples!
