Еvery nation and every country has its own customs , traditions and holidays.
Englishmen are proud of their traditions and holidays. Among them are : Halloween Thanksgiving Day Guy Fawkes Day Christmas Valentine’s Day St Patrick’s Day Easter May Day
Halloween (31 st October) It is the day of All Saints. • • British people believe that ghosts and witches alive on that day. • Young people wear their witches’ and ghosts’ costumes. Some boys prefers wearing Frankenstein costumes. • Pumpkin with a candle inside it is the main symbol of Halloween. • Children play different games such as musical chairs and pin the tail on the donkey. • Women make pumpkin pies and toffee apples. • Children go from house to house and say : ’’ Treak or treat ‘’.
Thanksgiving Day (4 th Thursday of November) • It is the holiday commemorating the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony in 1621, after a winter of starvation and privation. People decorate their houses with fruit and flowers of autumn and prepare traditional food. They thank god for many things.
Guy Fawkes Day (5 th November) • On that day in 1605 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and kill King James First. • British people burn a dummy, made of straw and old clothes, on a bonfire and let fireworks. • This dummy is called a “guy”.
Christmas (25 th December) • It is the most popular holiday in Britain. • People spend time at home, with their families, eat special food (turkey, potatoes, green vegetables, a Christmas pudding). • Many people decorate Christmas trees. • In churches people sing Christmas carols – special religious songs.
New Year ”s Day • It is less popular in Britain than Christmas. • Some people have New Year parties. • At midnight they listen to the chimes of Big Ben.
Valentine’s Day (14 th February) • It is celebrated on the 14 th of February. • It is the day of sweethearts. • People send cards, candies or flowers to those whom they love.
St. Patrick’s Day • Saint-Patrick is the national saint of Ireland. • St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in Ireland the US, where people often wear green clothes to honour St. Patrick. • Shamrock is the national symbol of St. Patrick’s Day.
St Patrick’s Day (17 th March)
Easter (Late March or April) • A Christian holiday. • Christians remember the death of Christ and his return to life. • They go to church and have a celebration dinner. • The most popular emblem of Easter is the Easter Egg. • People paint hard-boild eggs in different colours.
May Spring Festival. (1 st May) • Girls put on their best summer dresses and put flowers in their hair and around their waists. • The most beautiful girl is crowned with a garland of flowers.
